Jackie Chan circles 'Karate Kid' remake
Jackie Chan soon could be mentoring a karate kid.
The martial arts star is in negotiations to star in Columbia's remake of "The Karate Kid." He would take on the role of mentor Mr. Miyagi, made famous by Pat Morita in the original franchise.
The studio also has signed Harald Zwart to helm the picture, which possibly will begin shooting this year in Beijing.
Jaden Smith is set to star as the boy to be mentored by Chan's character. Like the original, which starred Morita and Ralph Macchio, the movie will examine the relationship between a martial arts expert and a boy who is picked on by bullies.
Will Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz's Overbrook Entertainment is producing along with the original film's producer Jerry Weintraub. The setting will be relocated from the U.S. to China. Chris Murphy has been attached to pen the screenplay.
The WMA-repped Chan, who next appears in Relativity's action-comedy "The Spy Next Door," has broad appeal overseas, which undoubtedly appealed to Columbia. His "Rush Hour" franchise has earned about $750 million worldwide.
The ICM-repped Zwart directed the tween hit "Agent Cody Banks" and Columbia's upcoming "The Pink Panther 2."

NO WAY!!!!
The Karate kid cannot be black for two glaringly obvious reasons.
One : At some point they have to call the karate kid a round eye, this would be appauling if he was black as well because of the history of oppression these guys have behind them, and it's totally cool to call us whiteys round eyes we dinae give a fuck :D
Two : There can be only one motherfucking black martial artist and that my friends is Jim Kelly yo!!!!!
KiiiiiiiiiAAAAAAIIIIIiiiiiii

My recent, mildly drunk, rant on why the original Karate Kid rules.
See, here is my whole thing about why Karate Kid i so great. I think it's the best "mentor/student" genre flick ever made, for many many reasons. Not sure why it took this long, but I only recently realized the genius and beauty of the final kick.
Notice that Miyagi never taught him that kick, in fact he kinda discouraged it. Daniel had to go and learn it for himself. The entire movie, Miyagi isn't just teaching Daniel karate, he is as much a surrogate father to Daniel, as Daniel is a surrogate son to Miyagi (remember - Miyagi's wife and kid died in an internment camp during WW2, even though Miyagi fought as a US soldier - sick burn). Miyagi is teaching him how to be his own man, and 'balance' is the central key to it.
So on the surface of the story, Daniel trusts his sensei, and overcomes the social hump of being bullied at school. But the real victory and subtext is that he has come into his own and found balance, not just with his sensei's teachings, but with something he had to discover for himself. He takes real ownership of his life's direction.
Even though Karate Kid 2 is not nearly as good as the first film, I still really like how in the final fight, he tries the kick again. Doesn't work. Not because he is any less of a man than his opponent, but it's a new journey, and requires a new "move" as a symbol. In the first film, Daniel learns his path, but in the second he must walk it. Fuck yeah.
