is there a way in itunes 8.0.1 to get rid of the genre field leaving just the artist and album list view at the top?
- Raniator0
right-click on it > untick it

theres three different views in itunes 8.0.1. LIST, GRID or COVERFLOW. I want to get rid of the Genre section in LIST view.

Right click on Genres and deselect.

In the list view i don't think you can. You can hide the browser though if it bugs you.
- I"m assuming you mean the genre column in the 3 column broswer.MSL

Unless it's a windows computer, my osx terminal command 5 posts above is the real deal. Just launch terminal, paste the line, hit enter.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Sorry about withholding my source, I was just checking if I had any credibility here and if someone would use a terminal command from a stranger like that.. apparently not :)
http://www.macosxhints.com/artic…It did work for me, just as the hide iTunes store arrow links thing linked from there.

Is there a way to do this on windows? I never use the genre panel and it just looks messy..

To remove the genre column on windows:
1) Shutdown iTunes
2) Backup your prefs file
C:\Users\(youruser)\AppData\Roam... Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml
(if youre on xp, the file is in
C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\Applicat... data\Apple Computer\iTunes)3) Edit the file in a real text editor that understands UNIX linefeeds (notepad++, ultraedit, vi, etc) and paste the following lines below the <dict> line under <key>User Preferences</key>:
<key>show-genre-when-browsing</key>
<data>
AA==
</data>4) Start iTunes and you should be set.
To turn off the annoying store arrow links, paste in this:
<key>show-store-arrow-links</key>
<data>
AA==
</data>

Um... Edit > Preferences > General
"Show genre when browsing"Unticking that will probably do it...
