Whats up QBN... So I'm Seriously considering relocating, I love NYC but the cost of living/rent here is crazy for artists/designers. (I want to eventually own a house.) I heard mixed stories about the design in Philly, that is sucks and that there is little creative work, but a lot of potential community for art. Ex: Space 1026 Any insight or design studio recommendations would greatly be appreciated. What areas are known to hold down creative types, fashion, small studios? I haven't been to Philly since I was 15... they were bulldozing down everything and fixing up the city, I remember heat waves, my father grew up there, but he doesn't know much about creativity. Links/advice would be very helpful and appreciated, Thanks in advance!

No, I've lived in NY for 6 years... Manhattan for 2... It doesn't suck for designers but I've worked for Armani, Hearst and all the top publishing houses... I'm simply considering moving on. I live in Midtown and rent in this building starts at 2K, sure I can move to Williamsburg - Bedstuy. Design pays the bills and I love it, but I'm an artist too... I just want to possibly run my own studio one day and invest into housing, good luck doing that in NYC. I can always come back... Being in Europe has really shown me how people have a home base and travel around all of the time doing creative work.

Old City and/or Northern Liberties areas prolly have the most artsy peeps and art-related bidness (and hipsters and the happy folk too)....Design in Philly is awesome compared to like Delaware, but obviously not like other design-centric cities like new york. Why not telecommute? Philly is getting better by the day imo. NYC is dope too, and not too far from Philly. Go Phillies! Here's a list of comps >

Philly was fun and all but the city's design scene is limited at best. It's really like working in a little pocket world.. still can be pretty charming, but living there permanently would get a little old for me.

I am moving to philly Sunday :) Renting for now but got a nice place in queen village for crazy cheap. Jobs are few and far though.
Took me 6 months to find something.

Thanks a lot cher... Personally, I think NYC is and always will be great esp for big clients and corporate design work. But I also think that this city being the default local for creativity for such a long time is sad. It was the perfect formula back in the day and there have been many numerous ground breaking artists and studios here. I see great design coming out of latin america and all over europe, why can't sweetness come out of a place a few hours away from nyc, where you can also live comfortably and is yet over-saturated. Sure NYC is great for fashion and editorial and everything else, but these big print/magazine companies wont be around forever... things are changing and I think its good to at least be open to new possibilities. Places like NYC are popping up all over the global world.

I'd miss the food and stupid pussy in NYC but if you're a good designer you can work from anywhere these days.

I love nyc, it's so convenient and hard to leave... sure I have to put up with tourists being in my way sometimes, living in a box, and paying ridiculous prices, along interacting with stuck up assholes... but then and again ive met really awesome people, parties, events, there's always something going on.
