I am to be shooting a glass award statue. how best may i go about doing that. aside from using lighting, a circular polarizer seems like a good idea.
any other tips ? should I ask at dpreview instead of here?

If you have control over the lighting you will be ok, just take a lens cloth to get any finger prints off the trophy first!
If you have the time, go with constant lights and a tripod. That way you can constantly adjust to get the desired effect/reflections and just correct the white balance later.

I am proposing to get them a cicular polarizer. I wonder if I should suggest a hand held light meter too.
do you use one slappy, a light meter different from the camera?

Not sure how much studio time you have got but I get a lot of good tips and ideas from here.
http://strobist.blogspot.com/ specifically here as I haven't got that much experience. http://strobist.blogspot.com/200…

shooting digital? USE TRIPOD.. you might get better results from modeling light than flash..... sounds crazy but it could happen...

thanks slappy, thanks reed. i don't think they have a modelling light. but i did see something that looks like a light from theatre: folding, black metal petals...
their photo department is a bit small at the moment, i hope i am the one to change that....

I would treat it like a portrait too and use a longer focal length like 85-200mm range. Primes are good too as they are usually tack sharp, wider aperture, better bokeh and almost perfectly corrected for distortion etc.

yeah, they only have the 24-105, with a 1.3 crop (1d mkii). that should work nicely.
being the staff photographer has its perks. thanks again for the tips.

this photostream has some nice set-up shots along with final product. there's a few glass examples in there somewhere.

under-lighting is a good option... Mini Black-Cards close up always help too..

A basic step by step way of doing it, I've tried it, straightforward to set-up and relatively easy:
