I'm a web developer and a designer friend of mine just launched her new website and made me wonder why don't all designers design clean, simple HTML websites like this.
http://www.justinegaxotte.comIs there an older thread here with a comprehensive list of links to simple, minimal, well-designed sites like this? I checked linkdup.com, but there's way too many links to sift through.

hmm is there a bug in the youTube player on here?

Nice, thanks. I wish minimalsites categorized the links by type, such as 'portfolio site', 'e-commerce', etc.

Okay... I would agree that your friend Justine's website is fairly straight forward... but is boring as all hell and the grid system is pedestrian at best and why is the content squooshed together and crammed on the left side of the browser? I also subscribe to the "less is more" design philosophy, use of negative white space would greatly improve on her (UI) interface design of her site.
Here is an example of a simple yet elegant website design: http://www.kindnessandhumility.c…
- I dont necessarily agree its too hard to read his typefaces because their meshed together.Iggyboo
- his flash work is impeccableIggyboo

That's a totally different point you are making. I am talking about straightforward HTML presentation. Not slick ultra-minimal design that goes out of the way to look cool. Besides, that website is in Flash and annoying as hell. You can't even bookmark anything. In addition, none of the content is crawlable by Google. Only the top level is visible to the spider:
http://www.google.com/search?q=s…That's not what I call good design. It's "slick" design that favors a minimal aesthetic over straightforward and clear functionality. That's the equivalent of the crazy aunt who wraps all her furniture with plastic and never uses "the good china" except on special occassions.
- most notably because that site did not choose to 'deep link', thus making the entire thing searchable/linkable.madirish

think mine is too simple now: http://nickwoods.us

i think if you are going to suggest that everyone design sites the same way you should probably pick something a little nicer as your example.

i see where you are going here, rxphoto. i appreciate a clear HTML site with nothing more than the work as focus. however, i would actually critique the navigation of your friends' site as just about horrible. it is impossible to go across the breathe of the portfolio without going in, through, back up to top, rinse, wash, repeat; not terribly becoming for such a "well-designed site", no?
as an aside, I truly appreciate the work in that site- it is very good.

it's simple, but not elegant... I've seen blind folk make better type and colour choices...

and i thought she'd be having the most awesome clients as a single designer,
in the small type it seems a lot of it has been done at an agency.sneaky she is!

because if we all designed minimal, text-based, blog-type sites the world would fucking suck.
ps: your friends site is boring and a full screen photo based site would show off their work A WORLD better than the tiny bullshit they are using now.
- why so vehement? bad day?hallelujah
- kinda', but mostly i took the "why can't all designers design this way" as an insult.********

- but then, what isn't, these days?hallelujah

here's a question, why do developers always want to dumb down everything to Tiny Photos, Text and Divs? What's wrong with REAL interaction?
- we'll probably never know...neue75_bold
- the answer might kill ushallelujah
- it's all we could hope for..neue75_bold
