About to reprint my folio. I'm fed up of these folders with plastic wallets.
Any ideas?

just make the whole thing yourself.
thats how i did mine.
i made the whole thing out of mat board and some hi quality prints.
that way you can put things however you want. make little folders and pockets to fit your work perfectly.

polyproylene sleeves are so 1999, just pick a nice stock that doesn't tarnish too quickly (ie: fingerprints, grease, smearing). I hand-bound my portfolio with a misted-plastic cover (kinda similar to what you can get from pina zangaro) and screwposts. Turned out great. If you use screwposts give yourself a nice big inside margin though.

Either Make boards or make a book. You can print high quality books in short orders from portfolio makers online. It might save you sometime but don't screw up any of the writing on there or otherwise you'll have to reprint.
I also think the plastic wallet is crap but, sometimes its easier to do. I don't like to do boards but if you do do them. Hire a really good printer to do the whole thing on a varnish stock, and get it mounted by the printer to save your butt on time. it cost me 300 to do a tight illo board with photo mount for 11 x 17's but it was worth every penny.
Good luck

Here another option..thats how i did mine.
Have your prints done on 160gsm paper (or thinner)....then you perforate them and.....put them in a real aluminim folder.....front back spine aluminium cover made to order.
1 inch thick with screws to hold your prints...you can still move or replace your prints by taking the screws out.
It is landscape orientated (so long way) Just over A4 format....You can have it engraved.
If you are interested got one left over .....It is not cheap but great look and feel....£25 including postage in UK for this alu cover.

Make it into a nice, perfect bound book. It's impressive.

make a copy of your butt cheeks and deliver it in a gorilla suit with balloons

Lulu is a gamble in my opinion. I've seen things that look great, and I've seen things that look horrid.

How about this?

How about you do some field work, find a printer who's willing to work with you and be able to have hands on experience doing a little press work for your own printed folio? Just some thoughts, you are (pretending) to be a designer after all...

are you wanting something you can leave behind or a one-of-a-kind piece that you carry with you everywhere? There are good options for both, I usually just print out some recent work on letter size paper and staple it for that office look, but whatever floats your boat.

nice comparison review

No offence but when I have interviewed people for a job, I really am not concerned what there portfolio looks like, I am more interested in what the work is like inside the portfolio.

That review really helps. Thanks

Maybe use lulu to send one-offs to potential employers and for leave-behinds—they seem to be relatively cheep. Then make a nice book for personal presentations using a nice portfolio case and inkjet printed pages.
