In my opinion, they really had something amazing going while Vince Clarke was still part of the band ("Composition of Sound" and DM 'Speak and Spell'). Beyond that, I have always thought 'the real' genius of Depeche Mode is Martin Gore. I think he is hands down one of the absolute best songwriters his generation.
If you're a fan of DM, and haven't already, you should check out Martin Gore's solo projects Counterfeit and Counterfeit².
