Hi, do anyone of you guys know if its possible to copyright, patent or trademark, a certain way a suit is cut ? For ie. the cut of a Tom Ford is very different than a Thom Browne, but is it possible to protect your cut from someone else copying it ? I guess this question goes to whoever in the fashion industry, just curious..

You can do it but its easy for someone to get around the copyright by changing the cuts a couple of centimetres, change the stitching, the buttons etc.....
Don't take this info as gospel though, this is what a friend who used to make custom leather apparel told me. He got out of the industry because of it. He would come up with designs then see bigger companies using an almost identical cut as his work. He tried to take them to court but the slight adjustments they made were enough for it to be deemed legal.

Copyright a patent or tm...? a Patent or TM already belong to someone....so i would say no

Thanks mate, I guess above all, even if we can trademark a cut, it can be altered even a milimeter and taken to the court with a case that its 'this much' different and get away with it. But if it feels good to tm a cut for yourself only, we can boost our confidence and advertise as this is our official cut etc so people will know and we feel better about it. It couldnt be that expensive to tm this sort of thing.
- like trademarking a name for the cut? you can do that, but not the cut itself.spifflink

Great example! Like I said, it all comes down to us boosting our confidence and advertise as our official cut etc so people will know and we feel better about it.

no you can't. it can only be trademarked and protected if its a marketing point, like an identifying way its cut that is obvious to consumers, like how chanel dresses are cut and patterned(even then enforcement is pretty scarce). you can't really patent much in fashion anyway unless its a novel way to do something, like a new fastener or new material or a new industrial process. don't worry about protection so much as staying ahead of the curve.

no. a different cut does not inherently change what any suit must have.

Speaking of suit cuts... I'm really getting fed up with seeing men around town in terrible cut suits.
In my opinion, a suit jacket should show a little butt. It shouldn't look like a drap that goes completely beyond the butt to where your actual legs start. Every suit jacket you see in fashion magazines is always cut perfectly, tapered well, etc. It's a struggle for me to find jackets that fit the way I want them to - kind of a rock/musician look but close to professional enough in that situation.
I just see so many guys in the worst suit, like it either wasn't tailored or was tailored terribly. The only thing worse that that is a suit jacket with no vents - no single vent or brit styled vents on either side. That's just awful.
I just bought this jacket yesterday, by a brand called Kostym:
Falls just a couple inches below my belt. Perfect.

Our cut is almost like Tom Ford's like very wide lapels not so pointy but more modern than the 50s cuts, giving the lapels a worn look like it stayed in a steam room for a few times, of course all handstiched, beltless, adjustable from two sides, a little above the waist but never lowrise, double vent, buttons imported from Italy, working buttons on sleeves hand stiched which take about 12-15 minutes for each hole etc etc

eatbreathdrive,
what do you do exactly? do you create garments? suit description sounds cool. I like the fits on Tom Ford's clothing - not for myself personally because I don't have any - but I always like what I see in magazines.

I actually own a construction company that builds high end luxury villas for a list clients but fashion and design have always been my hobby even when I was in college. I'm thinking for starting a fashion line, like I said before for high end clients and a website is on the way. Just may not be the right time to invest though because of the circulating air of crunches.

"the circulating air of crunches"
I don't even know what that means, but I love it.

The stronger your copyright, the more vulnerable you become to plagiarism.
