I'm not a massive tech nerd, but I do enjoy my electronics and what I've read of google's Android mobile software sounds pretty cool.
Anyone holding out for this device?

I've heard nothing of it? But I am starting to twitch in my chair. Its either because of this or the meth is starting to kick in.

"It's true, Amazon just announced that its MP3 music store will be pre-loaded as an application on the T-Mobile G1. Users will be able to search, download, buy and play music from Amazon MP3 -- that's a selection of 6 million DRM-free MP3 songs from all four major labels and many independents. The pre-loaded Amazon MP3 application provides G1 owners with a phone-optimised view of the Amazon MP3 store -- WiFi is required to download music, but searching, browsing, and listening to samples can be done over 3G. Tracks cost around $0.89 with most albums priced between $5.99 and $9.99. How you like them Apples, Apple."
Kinda cool.

Is this the iPhone killer that they're talking about? Don't think so!

is this the htc dream?

The OS will be great I'm sure, but do other companies not realise that design and desireabiliy play a big factor in what people buy. A plastic box won't cut it anymore, same goes for the function and simplicity of the thing. That T-mobile thing seems to have ignored the last 5 years of phone design

I have to say, that phone - ugly isn't the only word really. it's just bulky, and cumbersome.
I'm curious, does Apple hold a patent on using a touch screen keyboard in a phone? Do any other iphone styled phones use the same type of keyboard? Because if Apple holds this patent and others can't use that kind of system, it really is incredibly inconvenient for competitors. They're always going to have to fit a keyboard with buttons in there somewhere, they're going to want it to be a full QWERTY keyboard of usable size, and it's going to lead to bulky, inconvenient gadgets like the one pictured above.
I've never been fond of sliding phones, phones with twisting parts, etc. and this just steals the show in terms of trying to offer people a large screen, something similiar to the iphone when closed, and a full sized keyboard. Does it even have a touch screen?
- dude, it's like $35 bucks a month and it's got a built in phazer... what more could you ask for???robotron3k
- HTC touch coming soon, this is just the intro modelacescence
- nah, I've got a viewty and you have a touch screen qwerty option in that too.Wolfboy
- No. All Windows Mobile phones have touch keyboards as well.. you just need the stylus to use it.adev

I can't wait to see the first parody of the "I got a Zune for Christmas! and the kid crying, holding it picture" with this phone. What a piece of junk.

Think I'll stick with my iPhone 3G. Some pretty sweet app's for Android, though. The Google Maps, Live City and compass option was cool.

1999 called. They want their technology back.

yes, the hardware is ugly as sin. i'm more interested in the OS personally, considering it will soon be available for many, many handsets. choice is key here, and no heavy handed gestapo tactics ala apple. i want to write my own apps and do what i please with my phone, thanks. freedom is key.

everyone here seems to be stuck in their apple mode of thinking. OS != phone, phone != OS. they are separate disconnected entities here. you will have a choice.

That looks ugly!

the device has serious ID issues, compared with the iPhone, no doubt. that accounts for about 2% here though. everyone kind of new the thing would be a) not totally pretty, and b) limited to being deployed to an existing/in-the-pipeline device, given it getting to market at an opportune time. easily understood.
the real value however, is in none of that; it is the platform and direction of it that matters. this is a HUGE leap ahead of the closed platform of the iPhone (as of now) and could see some truly 'mobile' developments being deployed... not somewhat silly widgets querying nothing more than an existing website, gaming aside.
mg33- not to pick on you at all dude, but why the panties in a knot? seems like you have read/investigated this about zero. am i wrong?
epete22- what about this exactly, is 'old technology'? aside from the kernel (which is 100% custom to the deployment), what are you talking about? i am seriously interested to learn the perspective.
thanks family.
