Word is that Apple displays are overpriced.
An Apple 23" flat screen on the Apple store is $899. Crazy.
What is the second best? Samsung? Sony?
I'm trying to get 23" or bigger.

Dell is a good choice, just do your research. That fiasco with the 2007WFP (which I have) and the two different quality panels and you having no idea which one you get unless you search for crazy serial numbers in God-knows-where parts of the monitor was silly.
But I did get the good panel.
- we love apple, but rock duel dell monitors here at the office. they are very niceChazolta

I am not too sure about the new displays, but I have an old Studio Display which is about 7 years old now, and it still going strong, and the picture detail is bloody excellent. But I now what you mean about apple prices. Get a dell if you think apple a to expensive, just as good so I hear?
- I actually think those were some of the best ones..Meeklo

The bitter taste of low quality will remain in your mouth long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I have a hewlett packard it's amazing - i got it on sale for about 300,

if you wan't cheap, you can't go wrong with dell

check dell's refurbished gear (do the same thing for apple too!!)...
... I got my 24" dell for about $300 less than retail w/the same warranties etc... and I did have to replace it once - but had zero issues.
btw - Dell will ship you a new monitor and let you get it all set up before packing up your old one... not many companies have that kind of 'trust'.
- i had similar experience. one even got lost in shipping and they sent off another right away.skelly_b

Dell lcd's are great. I have the 24" at home and at work. Love it.
I have heard that they get their parts from the same supplier as apple, but have no way to confirm it.

Top monitor for top price. I have one of the 24" Dell monitors and it is pretty much as nice as my Apple. The screen is the most important interface to the computer, in my opinion. Don't get anything but the best image if you are looking at a screen for work. That said, most LCDs are pretty good anymore.
I have an Apple 23, a Dell 24, a Lenovo 22, and a Samsung 20. Of those, the Apple is the sharpest and has the best color, in my opinion, followed closely by the Dell. There is an obvious difference in the Lenovo and the Samsung. They are a little harder to calibrate and are not quite as razor sharp as the other two.

I have two Ultrasharp Dells at work and they are pretty good, having said that I don't do much print work.

In fact, don't buy any new apple crap. I get the feeling there's gonna be a whole diarrhea of new apple updates splattering all over the world.
