i've used lulu multiple times for various things. color printing is iffy. if you're printing a novel i'm sure they're fine. otherwise it'll cost you a few grand probably. i published a book awhile ago that way and it was quite an expense that never really paid off (at least checkbook wise but it is nice to have something you did in print).

Penco, here in Minneapolis, sells a product in which you can order pre-made hardcovers, heat the glue, and bind your own books. I forgot what the machine was called, but it goes for around $350 bucks. I think it's made by a danish or finish company. uline?
i forgot the name but there is quite a variety of book sizes. i'd buy it.
