I'm buying a new computer.
Is 3.2 Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon really that much better than the 3.0 Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon?
I mean, it's a difference of $800.
Advice. Please.

No, when you get up to the highest end stuff, it gets exponentially more expensive for negligible performance gains. I've had first hand experience with this.
Go with the 3.0 Ghz.

That's what I'm thinking. But... if you add up the difference of .2, you get 1.6ghz. That seems pretty substantial to me.
- designbot0
besides if your into overclocking at all, you could push the 3.0 Xeon way past 3 Ghz.

software is just starting to take advantage of multiple cores. I think it will catch up quickly, but right now even quad core is overkill for sure.
Shoot 64-bit processors have barely been taken advantage of.

How do Mhz and Ghz compare?
- designbot0
1,000 Mhz = 1 Ghz

8 cores and xeons are way overkill for web/graphic design. If you're doing heavy duty motion graphics and 3d rendering, then MAYBE. Otherwise it's a waste (they will not even get used).
Oh and BTW, most of the increased cost of XEONs comes from the high spec mobo and ram requirements. Pick the fastest quad core desktop model and you'll probably cut your cost in half.

So I think I'll go with Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.

Anyone have the new Mac Pro and do web stuff here? Whatcher specs and how does it perform w/ Adobe apps?
- I've got an iMac and Macpro laptop doing web stuff...works great...with all adobeSigDesign
- seriously? dude i would think the base model would melt your face off in speed. haha.kona
- i bought a refurb imac 24" 2.4 and it's lightning fast. cs3 smokes.kona
- yeah, i use AE and Premier also, and it works great with large video files, etc...SigDesign

Man, I'm not trying to be a Mac fanboy or anything, but man I'm glad I bought one.
I used to do the same exact thing as injoy: comparing chips, processor speeds, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. until I was cross-eyed.
I am more than pleased with using an MBP as my primary and only computer. It's going to last me a long time and I'll be pleased with the speeds for a long time.

PCs are different beasts... make sure the motherboard is expandable... they're not like macs, which will last for longer without problems (in my experience)... you want to have room to upgrade and interchange parts at will...

sorry if i'm jacking your pc thread in the notes section over there injoy. not a pc guy but your dual 2.8 setup is by far the way to go. max out the ram and start outperforming norad.

I just bought it. Dual Quad Core 2.8 GHZ.
I got the standard ram (2gigs).
Where's the best place to buy ram?
- crucial.com super cheap and guaranteed to work. got 4gb there for a steal.kona
- Thanks!injoy

ETM, what i meant was, with a Mac there's not the incessant drive to constantly look at new processors and what you can put into the motherboard because, correct me if I'm wrong, you really can't. You're mostly limited to their next major hardware version.
With PCs, especially with building one, there's that constant "what can I swap, upgrade, buy, etc." that deals just with the primary components: motherboard, processor, memory. Especially when it comes to building a brand new computer, the choices out there for buying each of these items is daunting and never ending.
