... or just arsey wanker with a chip on my shoulder
I have dropped in a project in the big messy stack of projects that nobody would ever manage to look at. To accompany it Have put the following text, which is honestly how I feel about the work. My gf thinks I sound like a cnut and thinks the person for whom the was done would be upset to read it. Opions would be welcome...
"Below: Sugarush Beat Company Illustrations
The dormant art director in me wanted to scream at these people to let me create a totally different visual concept for this band's debut marketing campaign.
However, I wasn't appointed as art director but as illustrator, and the leader of the band had such an unshakeable faith in his vision of a cartoon band in a vivid sugary world that it was clear from the get-go it would be impossible to sell a more edgy and 'cool' direction in. As illustrations, the work is fine. It did the job and the client was very pleased. As a visual story for a band who's musical style
should be appealling to the the very very ubercool urban-fusion crowd.... its alarmingly commercial and dare I say it, even rather childish. I fear that anyone liking the band's sound will be put off by the rather inelegant character animation videos and fizzypop renderings that greet them on further inspection. Still, that's the difference between being art director and illustrator I guess. My job was to create the world of Sugarush and to provide them with various scenes on a journey around the town where Sugarush have their magical factory. A few shown below. (Logo designed by band member)"

Sorry, the crucial missing info was that this is a project description on my website. Does it sound too harsh do you think?
- SkyPoo0
I am kissing photographs of both of you as I type.
- mikotondria30
"It did the job and the client was very pleased."...
Spend your money on whatever you choose, this is how you get to decide how it ends.- Miko I don't understand what this means!SkyPoo
- off with yer head thenrodzilla
- I answered this query below.
mikotondria3 - But you still clicked to see the next note. WTF ?mikotondria3
- basically, the is job done, do you want to work with these guys or the art director againrodzilla
- sorry off with my head thenrodzilla
- canuck0
So do you want a crit or not then ken?
- soynutz70
kinda agree with your GF, you should keep more... diplomatic?
- mikotondria30
haha, sorry - I mean, if you don't like how somethings gone down, but it wasnt in your control, then just forget about it and take the money. The client was happy, you got paid to do something that ultimately was far better than digging a hole in the road or packing cakes in a factory, and you can just walk out at the end of the day and get on with life until tomorrow. Don't invest any emotional energy into it if it's not your design company or band..easy, bro

- Ah okay, gotcha. It is my studio. Reality is that I have to show the commercial stuff because clients like it...SkyPoo
- .. its not like the work is 'bad' per se, its just that I woud have done differently if it was in my control.SkyPoo
- thats something you get into if the client asks you specificssoynutz7
- SkyPoo0
Canuck... a crit on my description of the project, not the artwork.
Soynutz.. thanks for your repsonse.
- whur ezz artwerks?7point34
- also anything that could be construed as negative should be striked from the description. you want to highlight the positive, ya know?soynutz7
- Josh, its not about the work its about the project description text... is it too harsh? or refreshingly honest?SkyPoo
- i was just curious. wondering if my opnion might change after seeing what your describing7point34
- Ah, I see. Probably in favour of what I wrote... its pretty shit!SkyPoo
- Llyod0
your website sucks
- canuck0
Sorry I only skimmed.
- mikotondria30
I kinda feel what you mean, though - the one phrase: "Logo designed by band member" tells it all.
Comiserations, mate - tell the band to imagine getting booked to play a gig, only to turn up and have to lip-sync cover versions of songs YOU'VE written..
- doesnotexist0
you're the illustrator, not the art director, you said so yourself. shut the fuck up and do the work!
- hahaha, thanks for replying. The answer doesn't fit the question in any way, but I'll keep it on file for something else.SkyPoo
- excellent.doesnotexist
- actually, I reckon this answer completely and perfectly fits the question mate.kelpie
- SkyPoo0
Okay, Soynutz understood what I was asking and has provided a response I can work with. Absolutely nobody else has any idea what I'm talking about so I'll just let this thread fill up with people saying "Where's the work?" and "Just tell them you don't wan't the job" and many other bizarre repsonses that are utterly utterly unrelated to the question I tried to ask ahahahaha, roffle roffle lambo etc.
Thanks Soynutz!!!
- scarabin_net0
none of that text is necessary
if i were a potential client reading that on your site i would expect to have to deal with negativity while working with you
- mikotondria30
OH!... you want us to tell you if you should put that text on your OWN website ??
Hell no, it makes you sound like a pissy little bitch.
Good god.- AH! THATS What I'm looking for HAHAHAHA... thanks!!!!SkyPoo
- mikotondria30
OH!, you want us to tell you if you should put that project description on your OWN website ??
Hell no, mate - it makes you sound like a pissy bitch and noone will work with you.
Sorry, we mostly misunderstood.
Never ever put anything like that on a publicly available site.
:D
Clear enough ?- I double posted, but embellished the second one.
Incompetent little prick I am, sometimes.mikotondria3 - erm, yeah, I got it from the post above... my thanks was genuine by the way.SkyPoo
- AH! DISREGARD MY LAST NOTE I JUST READ YOUR FIRST ONE. GOD THIS IS MADSkyPoo
- I double posted, but embellished the second one.
- 7point340
i'd say it might be too honest.
if you dislike a piece you've done, why put in online? just to garner admiration and possibly more revenue because it was published? but if people who like that type of artwork see that and then read the tag line and realize that you have very little connection to the work and were more or less going through the motions only doing it for a paycheck may be taken aback and even reconsider getting you to do it. does it save you trouble of doing more work like this? possibly, but then why showcase it at all? certainly in a personal portflio you can say whatever you want, but an online professional resumé? - doesn't seem to work. what kind of direction do you want your business to take?
maybe i'm over thinking. not at all trying to seem cuntish.
still curious to see the work.
- JerseyRaindog0
Maybe you should just put something like:
"My job was to create the world of Sugarush and to provide them with various scenes on a journey around the town where Sugarush have their magical factory."
instead.
- digdre0
