It's because most of the country can relate to those sort of people who are "picked" from obscurity in a call center to become the "star" of a TV advert and no doubt find it highly aspirational. Scary shit indeed.

Aye, PUO, I'd agree with that - the branches of Halifax I've been going to since H & BOS merged have been ever-increasingly filled with all the wondrous flavours of Britain's emergent immigrant classes since those adverts started running.
(er.. this is a genuine observation I've developed over the years, admiring of a campaign I hate so much - not a criticism. I just can't help sounding like that).
