I really need some advice, would you experienced freelancers mind sharing some of your knowledge with me? It would help me out a great deal.
Background
I have a job from a client, one that I have gone to great lengths to get, its a dream design job for me, and to be honest I'd probably have done it for free, but I need the money..
its a concept project, the client wants a range

hourly
er, what's your question?
- skser0
what industry?
- statik0
sorry, continued here,
range of concepts, then to choose the final one, and have full rights to all development concepts and wants the layered psd's too.
I was ok with this project until he mentioned the layered psd, should I flag this up or just shut up and get on with it?
sorry about the broken message but hope you can help anyways,
cheers
- Well working files can be insight into techniques you use you may wish to keep... good and bad :)ETM

will your ego be hurt if somewhere along the way (after you've done your job)... you see it and it's quite different from what you created?
- hallelujah0
I wouldn't want somebody fucking with my layers!

if you're not comfortable with them changing your work, then get the f out. if you don't mind, and do quality work (so why would they need to change it?!) then do your work, get paid, and pay some bills. or you can buy drugs.

charge 40 per hour
- statik0
not too much, but I've mentioned I can do it within their (small) budget, and just to clarify I've now got additional deliverables (layerd psds for all developments!) is this quite normal or should I be charging a little more to include these?
- usually if you're working at their place they keep your files, dude. so that means your layered PSDs.doesnotexist

it was a flat project rate they wanted, as I said I really want to do this job, it has the potential to lead on to more...but don't want to be taken for a ride next time.
- meltoni0
so take it! and give to them the damn psd files!
- skser0
What exactly is your job you have to do there?
- statik0
I've moved to vancouver from the UK and trying to get things moving, I really appreciate all of your feedback here...

just wanted to share whats on my mind with people in the know just to make sure I'm not gettin as* rap** ..
So yeah i guess I'll do it and give them the psd's... thaanks for listening anyways peeps, don't feel like such a sucker now..
has anyone else had the Monster enegry drinks...I can't F sleep anymore...gives me plenty of creative ideas and the power to plough through but they make you nuts thinking at 500 mph! I'm gonna slow down..

hmmm you sound like me when i'm drunk. here is my 2 cents.
If you agreed on a price and began work, then they asked for the additonal psd's once the job had started, I would definitely tell them... OK you can have them but it will cost you X.
If you haven't started the job, then it is your call. Personally I would up the price but if you really want the job then go for it.
Another word of advice? Is the design for a product they will be selling? If so, stand up and make sure you are getting paid what you are worth. If it is a product, they are going to be selling it based on the design work you are doing! You could potentially make them alot of money based on your work so don't get ripped off!

oh further to that point - don't fall for the "Oh we don't have a very big start up budget" - Well then they obviously don't have a good business plan and you don't want to be working with them anyhow. Any business start up that budgets $200-500 for an identity, website, business cards, etc.. is fly by night and do not waste your time.

so why would he want the psd files if its just concepts? concepts normally involve fpo's and 72 dpi images. Does he just want to update this design with new info? what kind of print is it? If its like a brochure yes you should charge more for the native files. 3x as much depending on the size of the company.
- matt310
have you worked with this client before? If not, make sure you get a deposit - A client asking for the source files on concept work sounds suspicious

so what happened?
