- but you get a feeling which lettercombinations you have to kern.. mostlymoamoa

The magical dummy kern!
- moamoa0
example:
pos @_kern_1uc_W @_kern_3sc_a -50;
Wapos @_kern_1uc_W @_kern_3sc_b -20;
Wbthe "a" needs to be closer to the W, if you would have in this case the same kernoption like Wb... you´ll have a small hole, and the "b" because of this length and the line on the left side would cross the W if the same kern option then Wa.
damn my english is to bad to explain that :)

It varies from one typeface to the next. Some type designers build in very good kerning; others, judging by the consistency of kerning pairs, left the job to a cross-eyed child.
I *almost* never kern paragraphs in a long text. I always kern headlines. I use metric kerning (default) for paragraphs unless the built-in kerning is shite. Is that what you're wondering, Marcelom? When to kern? I only breezed through this thread.

Like moamoa says, the solution depends on the typeface. Even though more often than not I will manually kern headlines, I find that certain typefaces, some from H&FJ in particular, pretty much kern themselves. Not for a pristine tightness and flow one expects in a logo mind you, but damn good enough for any headline. Mercury in particular has been a dream to work with for my church, I always use metric kerning and call it a day 9/10 times.

moamoa, how exactly do you do a find/replace for kerning throughout a document? I know how to find/replace text info, just wondering if there's a global way to consistently tweak kerning pairs...
- I think just find/replace********
- Nah, would have to enter some kerning message rather than text parametergramme
- I think just find/replace
