I think you need 30k to be ok. Not great but ok

I don't live in London, right now but I'd be better off if I did. I pay out nearly £3000 a year on the train. I also have a car which is a fortune to run with insurance etc. I would just cycle to work if I did live more locally. Rent is more expensive than my current mortgage but I'll have a better quality of life all round when I move. btw, I'm on a lot less than £30k.

I have worked in London on:
18k Impossible, but fun
30k Ok, but in debt every month
50k Great life but never saved a dime, started paying off the 18k years
80K+ Great life and I save cash for when I get old and shit.- You must have had bad debts if you couldn't save on 50kbabaganush
- try living in London on 18kkezza_2

I'll never understand how so many londoners get ripped off by rent. I'd really like to see what you're renting for £1000.

"rent an apt (alone)"
HAH! keep dreaming

One word of warning as well to those who might want to save money by living outside of London (eg: Brighton, Oxford, etc...) and commute in. Your annual rail pass (£3000+) will negate any costs you save in rent and when (not if) your train breaks down, that hour long commute will become 4.

"But, on the other hand, isn't London one of the best places to live in terms of art, music, social life, culture? Or do you just get sick of it like every other place?"
----I think it would be a novelty to start off with, youd move to london and be out and about doing cultural things, until you realised it was costing you a fortune. Its like any other city - I live in Edinburgh, its probably no2 after london of cities in the UK for tourists to visit - lots to see and do throughout the year, something which i hardly take advantage of anymore, you dont get sick of it, you just start taking it for granted.
Im quite happy with Edin and dont really have any want to move down to london. my wee bro stays down there so its cool to go down for visits whenever i want.
Edinburgh isnt cheap to live in , but its nowhere near the cost of london.

Five years ago, I did it on 15k and had a fucking laugh. 10k more and it's easier, then a few more still and it's wicked.
5k more and I'll save, promise...

there is actually loads of cheap and free stuff to do in london if you make the effort.
i suspect that's the key -- if you can't be arsed with the effort, london is too hard. if you can, it's brilliant!

If you take out housing, London is the same price as anywhere else really.
Buying a house or renting one, takes up more of your salary than anywhere else I know.

Um, totally depends on what you consider a nice lifestyle? but I think you can have a very nice lifestyle on £24,000. I know I did, anything less that 18,000 though is not fun unless you have just graduated. Just don't over reach on your rent, and there is so much cheap cool stuff to do in town, there is no need to spend a fortune on the cinema, art, etc, there are cheap nights, private viewings, etc. There are plenty of places to get smashed on less that £40 a night and lots of amazing place to eat for under £30 a head. I you want to spend every night in the buddha bar or eating out at the Ivy every night and live in covent garden then you may need more.

As my ol man says, you cut your cloth to what you have...

"If you take out housing, London is the same price as anywhere else really."
Sure, things like stamps (ie. nationally fixed cost items) are the same. Food, consumables, going out, public transport are all a little or a lot more expensive - it all adds up.
"you cut your cloth to what you have..." - nice turn of phrase

travel yes but consumables, food i find not really. As it's the biggest commercial city by far it is also the most competitive. Bear in bars tends to be 40-50p more expensive than some other cities but you can still find exceptions (Samuel Smith pubs etc.).
Transport is overpriced
Also more competitive 'deals' at restaurants/takeaways...depends upon how lazy you are in a lot of cases...swings and roundabouts really depends what lifestyle you pursue.
- Thats Beer not bear hahababaganush
- aren't bears men who like men with beards? you should consider raising your rates.vespa

Beer in London and uk, is generally cheaper than most cities in europe. There would be riots in the street if it was the same price and france or belguim...
