Drink a lot, Eat a lot.
There are a lot of good places to eat one of my favorites is Ports O Call a burger joint.. Cafe Du Monde is a given try the coffee there called Community Coffee pretty good stuff. Try a Po Boy, Try the sea food, order some Crawfish suck the head too get some oysters. Really most stuff to do either involves eating or drinking down in NawleansGood lil dive bar called Snake and Jakes check that out don't be scared of it. Another good one to check out is called Pal's both are good cheap and local places not that tourist crap.
For some music check out Tipitina's - Uptown
and One Eyed Jacks for a good time and music.

- Not as fucked as it was i haven't been back for a few years i was there right after Katrina. So from what i hear and read a lot has been rebuilt most of the stuff left is of course in the 9th ward where they are still picking their asses on what to do there.Dubby6toes
- Probably not they have rebuilt a lot but there are still FEMA trailers around and the 9th ward is still fuckedDubby6toes

Great place, Just go beyond Bourbon St. That part is cool for a night, but it's kind of like the Jersey of the French Quarter. Check out the galleries and go on walking tours.
This is a great place to eat: http://bourbonhouse.com/

Yeh, got to be Cafe Du Monde from about 3am onwards, it never closes..
For breakfast it absolutely HAS TO BE the Coffee Pot, where you'll be welcomed in typical Nola style, by some of loveliest ladies (think favorite aunt) who will cook you great omlettes and eggs benedict.
Spend time just wandering round and round the french quarter doing nothing and realising that it's different every time of day and night.
Avoid Bourbon street at night, it's fully of guidos and wannabes.
Nola has a really unique atmosphere that you really appreciate more and more as you are there.
What you want to do will become apparant as the city takes you under it's spell, and you'll crave going back as soon as leave.

I haven't been in forever, but I had a blast when I went 3 years in a row back in 2000-2003. To be honest, that place is dirty, but it's part of what that city is made of. It's in a fucking swamp, so it's to be expected. I love it there though. I wish I could offer suggestions, but I was piss drunk the everytime I was there; the food was great and so were the people... be weary though, most people will tell you "if you don't know what's down a street off the beaten path, don't go down it."
- yeah, i've heard. i do have a friend that lives in the city. i'm from the south, so i know how fucked up it can get.vanilla_cam

Stop by Central Grocery for a muffaletta, the best sandwich on the planet.
Then grab a monsoon from Port of Call.
Full belly, stiff drink, you'll be just fine.
- went to central grocery for the infamous muffaletta. also ate at jacques-imo's. fantastic.vanilla_cam

I had a chance to go to the place they make the mardi gras floats back in 2003/4, so awesome. They work year round on them, swing by if you get a chance.
