There's an old sea story about a ship's Captain who inspected
his sailors, and afterward told the first mate that his men smelled bad.The Captain suggested perhaps it would help if the sailors
would change underwear occasionally. The first mate responded, "Aye, aye sir, I'll see to it immediately!"
The first mate went straight to the sailors berth deck and announced, "The Captain thinks you guys smell bad and wants you to change your underwear."
He continued, "Pittman, you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowski, and Brown, you change with
Schultz."THE MORAL OF THE STORY:
Someone may come along and promise "Change", but don't count on things smelling any better.

US frowns on Chinese force in Tibet(AFP) – 21 hours ago
WASHINGTON — The United States on Thursday criticized China after violent incidents at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and called on Beijing to respect religious freedom.
The intervention of Chinese security forces at the Kirti monastery in Sichuan province is "inconsistent with internationally recognized principles of religious freedom and human rights," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.
Clashes erupted between security forces and locals at the monastery in southwestern China after a monk set himself on fire and died last month, according to the International Campaign for Tibet, a New York-based rights group said.
Police unleashed trained dogs on residents outside the monastery and beat people when they tried to prevent forces from entering the compound Tuesday, the rights group said.
According to Toner, security forces "have cordoned off the Kirti monastery."
The US administration raised the issue with Chinese officials, he added.
"We continue to monitor the situation closely and obviously are concerned by it," Toner said.
The rights group, citing local residents, said security forces were attempting to remove some of the 2,000 monks who live at the monastery.
The situation at the influential monastery has deteriorated since the March 16 death of a monk who committed suicide on the third anniversary of anti-government unrest in the area.
Resentment against Chinese rule runs deep in Tibetan regions of China.

Regardless of political persuasion if you highlighted that Dick Cheney's first name was "Dick" consistently during the Bush years or you call Obama funny names like "O-Bummer" you should expect that any political opinion you express will be on the same level as bathroom stall scrawls. But go on thinking you're contributing to the debate.

The Republicans’ inability to deal with the Ron Paul phenomenon—a show that, like the recession and The Fantasticks, keeps playing long after the original audience was hoping it would close—indicates a party in menopause. Even against the seemingly lightweight competition of the Obama brain trust, the Republicans have no stomach for budget cutting. As Reason's Peter Suderman has been reporting, last week’s apparently $38.5 billion in savings quickly dwindled to $14 billion and then down to a sub-billion figure. The president can give a rambling, orotund speech extolling a two-month-old budget proposal, and he still catches the Republicans flatfooted. They have no more interest in deficit reduction than he does. The strange thing is that this is not a slow news period, and it’s almost tempting to make the priggish complaint that we need to get serious about the issues. Sarah Palin left public life under very odd circumstances and is now best known for a daughter who dressed up like a monkey on Dancing With the Stars. Ron Paul is a sitting U.S. congressman whose son was recently elected to the Senate. Yet to go by the news mentions, Palin is the more serious Republican candidate. That’s what the media will do when you give them no reason to take you seriously.
Again, this is not to say Paul has a chance of getting elected president in 2012. But the Republicans can’t find any place for Paul’s supposedly radical message for the same reason they can’t manage to make even ten-figure spending cuts. They’ll have nobody but themselves to blame when their 2012 rosters turn out to be laughingstocks, and not even the good kind of laughingstocks.

^ Yeah but you have to realize Reason is a far-right publication. If you did a survey of the people who write for Reason and the general public on the issues the numbers would not match up. The policies Reason favors are never going to actually be implemented because they are too far out of the mainstream.
Take Ron Paul's candidacy as a data point. To libertarians and Tea Partiers he is a rock star but the public at large could care less about Ron Paul. He didn't win a single primary in the Republican race in 2008 despite all the hype.
In terms of budget cutting, it's short-sighted to focus only on slashing spending for the current year. You need to think long term and change the trajectory by making major changes to taxes, entitlements, defense spending, and health care. The worst thing you could do though is what the Republicans are asking and continue to push through more tax cuts for millionaires. That is a great way to drive the budget car straight off the cliff.

Ron Paul's message isn't radical, it's unworkable. He lives in the Libertarian fantasy land that doesn't understand how economics in the real world scale, utterly misrepresents how a gold economy work(ed), has zero grasp on how fiat currency works, and seems clueless about how a nation that a) is that largest economy b) is the largest military and c) owns the world's default currency for at least the next twenty odd years needs to wind itself down, if it needs to do that.
Utopianism of the Right.
