Make it easy for citizens to help
I am a member of a book discussion group for senior citizens. We have talked about the $13.7 trillion national debt, which surely played a role in voter anger during the recent elections. This is a huge credit card bill to leave to our children and grandchildren. How can we pay that off?
None of us wants higher taxes, although that might be necessary. And none of us wants Social Security or Medicare jeopardized. But we think there's another way to whittle away at this national burden. Why not create an option on income tax forms to donate money to pay down the national debt? We would support such an option if it came with an assurance that the money would go only toward this purpose.
If 20 million taxpayers contributed even $20 apiece this year, that would reduce the debt by $400 million. Over a 10-year period, that many $20 donations could add up to $4 billion. I would gladly give back $20 or more of the stimulus check I got this year. We think this plan gives the entire American family a chance to be part of the solution.
