The government transparency group OpenSecrets leaks a secret JP Morgan analysis containing their predictions for the new Republican Congress. Kind of interesting to read as a no-bullshit view on things.
http://www.opensecrets.org/news/…
The main takeaway:
"As the 111th Congress will be remembered as an active, albeit controversial Congress, the 112th Congress could be remembered as a gridlocked one without any landmark legislation."

Defeated Democrats Pen Letter to Implore Pelosi to step aside
http://politics.blogs.foxnews.co…The letter goes on to say "Madam Speaker, fairly or unfairly, Republicans made you the face of the resentment and disagreement in our races. While we commend your years of service to our party and your leadership through many tough times, we respectfully ask that you step aside as the top Democrat in the House."
The letter says that the defeated members "fear that Republicans will further demonize you, and in so doing, they will scare potential candidates out. The prospect of having to run against their own party leadership, in addition to their Republican opponent is simply too daunting."

Obama isolated ahead of 2012
http://www.politico.com/news/sto…
Obama has performed his act of contrition. Now comes the hard part, according to Democrats around the country: reckoning with the simple fact that he’s isolated himself from virtually every group that matters in American politics.

Is anyone challenging Pelosi for Minority Leader? It's fascinating that there are no actual sources provided for that letter by Fox.
And honestly I don't see why, from a Democratic point of view, they would be against it. She accomplished more for liberal causes during the past two years than pretty any other political leader in the past 30.

Obama Says Dollar's Strength Depends on Economy

It's interesting, the thing you posted about Ireland. You might not have known this, but they are one of the few countries that instead of stimulus, dramatically cut spending as a response to the financial crisis. Just like a lot of far-right conservatives in this country have suggested.

So the "Debt Commission" set up by Obama (consisting of a conservative Democrat and ultra-conservative Republican because that's just how they roll in DC) issued its report today:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/20…
The main thing that would impact most peoples' lives are brutal cuts to Social Security and Medicare, cutting them by about 3/4 once everything is said and done.
Of course the part they never talk about in the media is what caused the debt. Was it Social Security and Medicare and other social welfare programs? No, those sustained themselves just fine for the better part of the 20th century and all other modern industrial democracies have them.
Nope, the direct cause of the deficit is simple - massive tax cuts for the rich. In the early 80s, Reagan began slashing the top income rate, and ever since then the debt has been steadily increasing until you get to $14 trillion we have today. It's really a pretty simple cause and effect.
But of course the media never talks about this correlation. So, collectively, by voting these dickheads into office and moving in a more conservative direction over the past 30 years, what most Americans are doing is trading away a decent retirement so the upper income bracket can get a tax cut. Is that really what those of you, even conservatives, want?
I'm just really wondering because it seems really crazy. And I'm sure if you explained it to most people they would say, hell no, let's raise taxes that small amount on the rich and close the budget gap. After all, that's was mainstream Republican policy until Reagan came along. There nothing especially "liberal" about the idea that we should have a stable middle class where people can live decently comfortable lives, start businesses and so on.
At the same time I wonder how many people will read about this and think, no I don't want all my benefits cut, but then go back and vote for Romney or whoever in the 2012 election because they are more focused on Al Queda hiding suicide bombs up their ass or an Islamic Community Center being built in New York or some other pressing issue. And of course others will probably come to the conclusion that it simply means Democrats and Republicans are equally bad and simply not vote to demonstrate how above it all they are.
Of couse, the truth is that they are not equally bad - if America simply voted more progressive Democrats into office they wouldn't have to face a brutal retirement and could live out a decent one instead like my grandparents and most other people of their generation are still doing. Anyone want to bet if they'll figure it out in time?

Krugman also points out something important - middle class people aren't actually living longer (which used as the excuse to justify raising the retirement age). Only upper income people are.
"So you’re going to tell janitors to work until they’re 70 because lawyers are living longer than ever."

Here's what I was talking about in terms of taxes and debt. The two graphs are almost perfect inverses of each other.
There's really no trick here, the massive debt was caused by massively cutting taxes on rich people. That's the problem Congress is trying to solve.
The only solution you won't hear from the "center" and far right? Raising taxes on the rich. Because God knows you can't run an economy that way. Except possibly in America during the 40s through the 70s when it worked just fine. But let's not think about that.
