What's pretty funny is how some people on the right were talking about Petraeus running for President in 2012, when they didn't know anything about him either. He's never even indicated that he's liberal or conservative.
Apparently any guy with some medals is automatically qualified for running the country, or more likely they thought he would be a good candidate and they could use him as a puppet once he got in there.
- I think you'd have to say this new job kind of puts an end to any potential campaign.ukit

That Vanity Fair article ponyboy posted is the smartest thing he ever posted. His analysis of it wasn't.
- ukit0
Interestingly, according to some reports Petraeus was one of the key figures in the government calling for the U.S. to be tougher on Israel...so clearly he's not a down the line ideologue either way.
- The US Military sees Israel as a hindrance to longer strategic aims. It's AIPAC that keeps us friendly with them.TheBlueOne

from the vanity fair article:
"Petraeus would sit through two long days of hearings, first in the House, and the next day before the Senate heavyweights, including three Democratic presidential hopefuls vying with one another to appear the most fervently anti-war. He had flown through eight time zones to answer questions, only to face interrogators more keen on listening to themselves. He was lectured by Foreign Relations Committee chairman Joseph Biden, who questioned the validity of the general’s figures about the sharply reduced violence. (Biden was in fact wrong.) Senator Hillary Clinton, then the front-runner, in so many words called Petraeus a liar. To be fair, she put it politely, and might even have meant it as a compliment, one professional prevaricator to another, calling his testimony an “extraordinary effort” but one that requires a “willing suspension of disbelief.”
Senator Barack Obama was equally dismissive."
Fucking hypocrites verbally raped him... treated him like shit... ... a man who put his life on the line so they could all speak as freely as they did... ... for no other purpose than to position themselves politically...
... now he's their lead man!!!

Those hearings were all politics about being for or against the war in Iraq. This is Afghanistan. Somehow you think life is a big movie.

I am criticized for calling people names and insulting people I disagree with quite a bit around here. I am guilty of that. Most often when I do that it is because I become frustrated. I ask questions that go beyond sound bite slogans and go deeper into what people would rather have happen and get no answer at all. I am sorry if I do this to you but if you are against something, maybe once in a while you should propose something to take the place of what it is that you are opposed to.
- word that... I'd like echo your sentiments... ... and I promise to 'think' a touch more to make sure I don't always come off...PonyBoy
- ... like another sound bytePonyBoy
- Wow doc playing the martyr. You think you ask questions? you dont want to hear any truth you dont like.********
- and when that happens is when you feel frustration. that frustration is from the denial of fact.********
- and what are these questions you ask that go deep, because i cant think of one.********
- oh and george soros is a big backer of thinkprogress.********
- jump out a window, troll.DrBombay
- feeling frustration from denial so you're reverting to insults again. should work on that********
- That wasn't an insult. They were basic instructions.DrBombay
- hurtful instructions AND name calling actually. were you a bit frustrated? we can talk it out.********
- No thanks. Interaction with trolls is stupid.DrBombay
- thats fine the healign wont begin until you let it.********

Generals get shuffled. They answer to political figures in our system, and we shouldn't kow tow to them. Good thing you guys weren't around during the Civil War, Lincoln went through Generals like shit through a pig. That's what happens.
The more important thing re: the Obama administration was keeping Robert Gates on staff as SecDef. that should clue you in to the fact that there wasn't really going to be any major policy changes from Bush in regards to military policy in SE Asia.
- havent you heard? there is a civil war in arizona.BonSeff
- sincerely, jon voightBonSeff

"a man who put his life on the line so they could all speak as freely as they did... ... for no other purpose than to position themselves politically..."
Generals, esp. in the post Vietnam era, are also political motherfuckers who seek to play their civilian superiors. Just bc a guy wears a uniform doesn't make him holier than though.
In case your interested, a great read on the sausage factory that is the Pentagon officer corp, you can't go wrong reading about John Boyd, the USAF fighter pilot who singlehandedly took on the Pentagon appropriations process, wrote THE book on modern supersonic dogfighting, made the A-10 warthog a reality, and then went on to rewrite the the Marine Corps basic combat strategy:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product…
That book will clue you in on how 98% of the upper echelon military officer corp are slimy political operators..and it's a hell of a read about a real American hero btw.

Ore. woman accused Gore of sex misconduct in 2006
By STEVEN DUBOIS (AP) – 32 minutes ago
PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland massage therapist accused former Vice President Al Gore of "unwanted sexual contact" at a hotel during an October 2006 visit, but no charges were filed due to lack of evidence, law officials said Wednesday. This allegedly happened in the same suite I spent my first 2 nights of my honey moon in!!!

"...the counterinsurgency strategy depends upon a very close joint implementation of military, political, economic and diplomatic efforts. That is at the heart of it.
What you see in Gen. McChrystal is someone who is openly disdainful of and sets himself up almost in opposition to the U.S. ambassador in Afghanistan, the State Department high representative Richard Holbrooke, the national security adviser, the vice president.
So you have to ask yourself how would it be possible that they would actually be implementing a counterinsurgency strategy with that level of disconnect and friction between the military and civilian authorities. If McChrystal and his team are so contemptuous of these other people whose support is absolutely critical to the success of the mission, then he's failing at his mission. This is not about his manners, this is about his ability to effectively execute the task he's been asked to execute."

that's shady as shit. I never liked moveon.org
- WrappedInBooks0
^This moveOn ad takes his statements completely out of context. There's a video from the senate sub-committee hearings and Petraeus' statement may have included what MoveOn said, but there was also qualifiers for said statement...
