A Test of Arizona's Political Character
By Michael Gerson
Wednesday, April 28, 2010"Arizona's new immigration law is understandable -- and dreadful."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp…
"This law creates a suspect class, based in part on ethnicity, considered guilty until they prove themselves innocent. It makes it harder for illegal immigrants to live without scrutiny -- but it also makes it harder for some American citizens to live without suspicion and humiliation. Americans are not accustomed to the command "Your papers, please," however politely delivered. The distinctly American response to such a request would be "Go to hell," and then "See you in court."
P.s. JazX: The difference between The Washington Post (in which this article appears) and The Washington Times is that in the Post, conservative commentators like Gerson often make reasonable, well-argued points. There is no such representation or balance in the Times.

- That being said, if you can show me a liberal on The Washington Times editorial staff, I'll post an apology.luckyorphan

Republican unity on financial bill breaks down
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn…
Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, is set to break ranks with his party over the financial regulatory reform bill:
The American people "want us to get something done," Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, said in explaining why he would eventually join Democrats in insisting that the bill be debated on the floor.
Voinovich, who is not seeking re-election in November, would not say exactly how long he would wait before switching his vote but said, "I have an idea of how much time it takes to cut a deal." He also said he expects "a whole bunch" of other Republicans to make the same decision.

On Tuesday, seven members of the Los Angeles City Council signed a proposal for a boycott, calling for the city to "refrain from conducting business" or participating in conventions in Arizona. Councilman Ed Reyes, who coauthored the proposal with Councilwoman Janice Hahn, said he wants city officials to spend the next 90 days assessing the financial relationships that exist between various city departments and businesses based in Arizona.
"If Arizona companies are taking our money, I want to sever that," he said.

"Drill Baby Drill"
The U.S. Coast Guard will attempt to burn off portions of an oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, a U.S. Coast Guard official said, as the pool of crude began to encroach on sensitive ecological areas in the Mississippi River Delta.

Looks like Edward Tufte may already be making a significant impact on information dissemination and presentation for the Obama administration. He's not mentioned in this article, but if you've attended any of his seminars you'll know that powerpoint is an application he strongly recommends against using.

Uh...
“I think we should catch ’em, we should document ’em, make sure we know where they are and where they are going,” said Pat Bertroche, an Urbandale physician. “I actually support micro-chipping them. I can micro-chip my dog so I can find it. Why can’t I micro-chip an illegal?
“That’s not a popular thing to say, but it’s a lot cheaper than building a fence they can tunnel under,” Bertroche said.
- Put aside the racism here, if you caught them wouldn't the problem sort of be solved?ukit
