On Sunday, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R-Miss) defended Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's omission of slavery from his "Confederate History Month" proclamation.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," Barber said that the firestorm of controversy raised by McDonnell's proclamation is "just a nit". "It's trying to make a big deal out of something that doesn't matter for diddly," Barbour claimed.

McDonnell apologized for the omission, but when host Candy Crowley asked Barbour if he thought failing to mention slavery in the Virginia proclamation was a mistake, Barbour replied, "I don't think so."

Republicans finally recruit a candidate to run for Senate in New York - the former Chief Economist for Bear Sterns, the investment bank that collapsed in 2008 for making too many subprime loan investments.

"As of November 30, 2007 Bear Stearns had notional contract amounts of approximately $13.40 trillion in derivative financial instruments, of which $1.85 trillion were listed futures and option contracts. In addition, Bear Stearns was carrying more than $28 billion in 'level 3' assets on its books at the end of fiscal 2007 versus a net equity position of only $11.1 billion. This $11.1 billion supported $395 billion in assets, which means a leverage ratio of 35.5 to 1. This highly leveraged balance sheet, consisting of many illiquid and potentially worthless assets, led to the rapid diminution of investor and lender confidence, which finally evaporated as Bear was forced to call the New York Federal Reserve to stave off the looming cascade of counterparty risk which would ensue from forced liquidation."

Yup, this is the guy Republicans pick to represent you in the Senate. The guy who tanked one of the largest financial institutions in the world.

How did the Party of Lincoln and Liberty transmogrify into the party of Newt Gingrich’s evil spawn and their Etch-A-Sketch president, a dull and rigid man, whose philosophy is a jumble of badly sutured body parts trying to walk?

The interesting thing is that when the Republican party was formed, they went to war against the South to defend modern progressive values. Now, they represent the South and go to war against modern progressive values.

The point when the Democrats and Republicans traded places was during the civil rights debate in the 60s. Many of the racist Southern Democrats were so mad that Lyndon Johnson signed the law giving black people equal rights that they left and became Republicans. At that point, Republicans decided they would base a large part of their campaigning strategy around white resentment of blacks.

Lee Atwater, who ran campaigns for Nixon, Reagan, and Bush, described it in the following quote.

"You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger"—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.
And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me—because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Nigger, nigger".

In 2005, Ken Mehlmann, the former RNC leader who is widely believed to be (yet another) closed gay conservative, went and spoke at the NAACP and publicly apologized for the racist tactics the Republican party used. I wonder how many years from now we'll see him and other gay Republicans apologize for how they treated the first Black President.

John McCain — who built his political persona and his 2008 presidential campaign around the claim that he’s a “maverick” — told Newsweek recently: “I never considered myself a maverick.”

When POLITICO asked McCain about the contradiction at the Capitol this week, the Arizona Republican grew visibly irritated and snapped: “I’ve been called a thousand things. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

State Senator Roy Ashburn – the recently out California GOP lawmaker wit a long anti-gay record – pleaded no contest Wednesday morning to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol in a Sacramento court, the AP reported.

Ashburn's sexuality came under close scrutiny after details of a March 3 arrest were made public, including the fact that he was traveling with a male companion after leaving a popular Sacramento gay bar.

After evading the press for five days, the conservative lawmaker and father of four told talk show host Inga Banks: “I am gay.” Social conservatives immediately asked for Ashburn's resignation, while Republicans gave the 55-year-old politician a pass.

The lawmaker was represented in court by his lawyer. He was sentenced to three years of informal probation and 48 hours in the county lockup.

Pelosium: A major research institution has just announced the discovery of the densest element yet known to science. The new element has been named Pelosium. Pelosium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311.

These particles are held together by dark forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

The symbol of Pelosium is PU.

Pelosium's mass actually increases over time, as morons randomly interact with various elements in the atmosphere and become assistant deputy neutrons within the Pelosium molecule, leading to the formation of isodopes.

This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientist to believe that Pelosium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass. When catalyzed with money, Pelosium activates CNNadnausium, an element that radiates orders of magnitude more energy, albeit as incoherent noise, since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons as Pelosium.

On Tuesday, a wave of protesters, upset with overly-burdensome taxation by the federal government, are set to descend on the nation's capital to express their displeasure.

But does their anger reflect the truth about today's tax rates?

After all, neutral economists insist that, under the Obama administration, the overwhelming likelihood is that your tax burden has gone down, not up. Even conservative economic analysts acknowledge that there really is no basis for middle- and working-class Americans to believe that they're suddenly paying more.

"The only tax I think that has been put in place so far is an increase in the federal cigarette tax. I can't think of another Obama tax that has gone in place so far," said Chris Edwards, Director of Tax Policy Studies at the conservative Cato Institute.

More than 25% of tea party members believe the government favors blacks over whites, according to a new survey by the NYT, and over 50% believe the government does too much to help the poor.

"I do believe we are responsible for the widow and the orphan," said Richard Gilbert, a 72 year old retired teacher. "But I think there is a welfare class that lives for having children and receiving payment from the government for having those children. They have no incentive to do any better because they have been conditioned into it."

"Citizens for Tax Justice, a self-described non-partisan organization, released a report on Tuesday that read: 'The 2009 economic stimulus bill actually reduced federal income taxes for tax year 2009 for 98 percent of all working families and individuals.' This total includes the 95 percent of working families that will or have received tax credits in the range of $400 to $800."
