"Are those under 55 ... gonna get the same deal as their parents? No, probably not," he said.
Throughout the interview, the congressman said Social Security benefits should be kept the same for those already receiving them, or those over 55.
"You mean cut Social Security benefits as a way of balancing the budget," Chris Matthews said.
Hensarling rejected Matthews' wording, but continued to call for privatization and reduced benefits for those under 55.

So instead of simply allowing the Bush cuts to expire on schedule, which would require no new legislation, the Republican plan is to "privatize" social security. But wait - not for the baby boomers who are currently hitting retirement age and receiving those benefits - the same generation that took our economy from no debt to 5 trillion debt.
Nope, the cuts will only be for the younger generation (us), despite the fact that we've all been paying into the system our whole lives just like them. If this plan is so awesome, why not implement it for the boomers - the largest retiring generation ever and the one that has the least savings?
All of this, despite the fact that Social Security isn't even the major issue in terms of the deficit.
"Per SSA Social Security is faced with a 2.01% payroll gap over the next 75 years. But if you break that down you see that the gap for the next 25 years is only 0.32% of payroll. And CBO puts the overall gap at only 1.3% of payroll."

Top Defense Officials Seek to End ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
WASHINGTON — The nation’s top two Defense officials called for an end on Tuesday to the 16-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, a major step toward allowing openly gay men and women to serve in the United States military for the first time in its history.
“No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens,” Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said it was his personal and professional belief that “allowing allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.”

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out
of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person
must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody
anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When
half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the
other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the
idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get
what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."~~~ The late Dr. Adrian Rogers , 1931 to 2005 ~~~

Adrian Rogers was a conservative Christian preacher apparently, one of the first to get Christians heavily involved in right-wing politics. So who was right, Adrian Rogers or this Jesus guy?

What is the reasoning behind being against the repeal of dont ask dont tell? I think it has more to do with the prejudices of the people that oppose it than anything. Why dont you go

Ukit, do not be so quick to dismiss the value of entities like hedge funds. They really are vital to the U.S. economy whether you fancy them or not. These sort of institutions provide tremendous liquidity for securities that would otherwise suffer, they make markets in the more popular instruments, and let us NOT forget, they create wealth. Tangible, sizable, true wealth.
I cannot tell you how many retirees I have made truly wealthy as they breeze right into their golden years. It feels good. Pays likewise.

The U.S. has among the highest personal and corporate income tax rates in the world right now.
Recovery from the financial downturn is taking longer than expected.
Coincidence? I guess the only #1 spot that Obama really cares about is highest taxes among all sovereign nations. Next, he'll shoot for #1 worst fiscal policy.
- Interesting theory on the US being the highest in the world. Care to prove it?luckyorphan
- No he can't. Because it's not true.Mimio
- luckyorphan0
- Of course, Japan is the highest in corporate taxes. But U.S. is 2nd.luckyorphan
- Wow look at that. A most of you EU residents still support your governments. Look at what they're doing to your money.********
- Who are "they"? In Europe residents rule their countries, In USA its the corporates, therefore the difference********
- luckyorphan0
^ The graph is from 2005, no doubt, but the records are still largely true.
The U.S. is still 2nd in the world in corporate tax rates, indeed. But they are far from being anywhere near the top in terms of personal income tax rates.
Please check your facts, everyone.
- As I said, "among the highest."
Stop splitting hairs and recognize it for what it means.******** - 22nd in personal income rates does not make the US among the highest, IMO. But fair nuf.luckyorphan
- As I said, "among the highest."

AIG to pay out $100 million in bonuses
American International Group Inc. is set to pay out about $100 million in a fresh round of bonuses to employees of its financial products division, the unit whose risky bets helped sink the company leading to a $180 billion government bailout, according to reports published Tuesday.

Here's a good blog post with references about our "Second Highest" corporate tax rate:
http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-en…
Some highlights, from the Brookings website:
"The United States has the second highest corporate tax rate of the 30 countries in the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). But because the United States has so many generous special tax preferences for businesses, it collects the fourth lowest corporate tax revenues as a share of GDP among all OECD countries."
http://www.brookings.edu/opinion…
- Josev0
From SmartMoney about that corporate tax rate:
http://www.smartmoney.com/invest…"Between 2000 and 2005, U.S. corporate taxes amounted to 2.2% of the GDP. The average for the 30 mostly rich member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development was 3.4%."
- ********0
Then that makes two strikes against us, doesn't it?
Unjustly high tax rates that result in ineffectively managed tax revenues.
1. Lower the corporate rates
2. Cut waste and poor spending

One of the main reasons the economy has taken a while to recover is that the market ideology(self-regulating markets) that caused the economic downtown in the first place has yet to be replaced by another ideology.
