I don't think the interesting point is his switch to the Democratic party. He obviously thought he had no other place to go. Did he look for a sponsor in the Democrats, knowing that another Republican would challenge him? Why not stay closer to his Republican base? Why not choose something more middle of the road on his political viewpoints? Libertarian? Independent? Not enough cash to seriously counter a Republican attack against his seat? Not to mention being that much more attractive to the Democrats as both the little shove they need to get Obama's agenda points pushed through with zero opposition, and as a trophy to show how theRepublican party is in the death throws of a political collapse.

Well the Republicans in their infinite wisdom were running an ultra conservative primary challenger against him. The guy, Pat Toomey, would have won in the primary (ahead of Specter by 20-some points) but almost certainly been crushed in the general election. A completely pointless exercise in other words.
The thing is, PA is pretty much a center-left state. All Specter was doing was representing his constituents, in fact for the most part he was more conservative than his constituents. Now he will probably feel pressure from the Democrats to support their agenda, which is his ticket to re election. Dumb, dumb move on the Republicans part.

rather than bumping the obama thread ...
all Obama does is sound good. He can't and won't change anything... he's still pushing for more wars, funding mercenary armies and stealing tax money for corporate agendas. Bush set up a little power fortress for the entire government no matter who's the prez. All that billions in 'security' and restructuring is what Obama inherited and it was for the long term.
Meanwhile the suburban liberals and naive populace all smile a like to themselves like mr half black man is the messiah...trust me the messiah ain't a politician.

What the executive branch won't do, the courts hopefully will:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/2…
"The court said the government could ask judges to conduct a case-by-case review of whether the disclosure of specific documents would jeopardize national security. But allowing the executive branch to shut down an entire lawsuit whenever an official says its subject is classified would be a “concentration of unchecked power” and lead to abuses, it said."
- zenmasterfoo0
Interesting point TBO. The question remains that does the word "official" simply pertain to a presidential determination of classified? As Commander in Chief, does the President have the authorization under the constitution to do this? Why not? If not does the term official also lay aside the authority that the Joint Chiefs of Staff have, or senior military personnel, or the Secretary of Defense? This could also get hairy if it strips that power from senate committees, say on foreign relations or national security. And I haven't even brought up the CIA or FBI.
It's a stickier piece of gum than it looks at first glance. But allowing the courts to be the check stopper on all security classifications might not wash.
- I agree..but does Obama want this to go to the Supreme Court?TheBlueOne
- Does he want to be seen defending a Bush era policy in the highest court?TheBlueOne
- I can't imagine any president would allow for this. It subverts his/her power. Not to mention slows government down.zenmasterfoo
- Either way, this is going to be bigger than it looks at first glance.TheBlueOne
- And to be honest, the Bush excuse will only work for so long. It's his administration now.zenmasterfoo
- I think it already is.zenmasterfoo

New polling showing only 21% of voters identify as Republicans.
I think maybe it's time to pulling the plug on this whole Republican thing. The coalition that Reagan put together doesn't work anymore. There are young people who would probably be receptive to a small government/ Libertarian message but are put off by the cultural conservatism.
I'd like to see a multi party system, with the Democratic, Green, Libertarian and Conservative parties all fighting it out.

So I know this was brought up earlier, but the fact that Gov. Perry in TX is seeking emergency funds for Tamiflu 2 weeks after threatening to secede from the nation is the funniest fucking thing in the world to me.
I told you guys the day he said that, give it 5 years and the US government would be airlifting food into that state if it went solo.
