Trump shouted down CNN’s Jim Acosta as ‘fake news’ then took a question from Breitbart. Funny, this Doonesbury comic from 12/18 was a bit prophetic...

Here’s the question Trump took from Breitbart: “Given that CNN just published fake news and all the problems that we’ve seen throughout the media over the course of the election, what reforms do you recommend for this industry here?”

    Trump:
“I don’t recommend reforms, I recommend people that have some moral compass,” Trump said in response to Breitbart News’ question. “You know, I’ve been hearing more and more about a thing called ‘Fake News.’ They’re talking about people that go and say all sorts of things. But I will tell you some of the media outlets I deal with are fake news, more so than anybody. I could name them but I won’t bother. You have a few sitting right in front of us [pointing to CNN’s Acosta and Sara Murray]. So, they’re very, very dishonest people. But, I think it’s something we’re just going to have to live with. I guess, the advantage I have is I can speak back. When it happens to somebody that doesn’t have this [points to microphone], doesn’t have that kind of a megaphone, it’s a very sad thing. I’ve seen people destroyed. I’ve seen people absolutely destroyed, and I think it’s very unfair. So all I can ask for is honest reporters.”

You can search Bbart for their record of the questions, I refuse to post their links...

    DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE
    WASHINGTON, DC 20511

    January 11, 2017

DNI Clapper Statement on Conversation with President-elect Trump

This evening, I had the opportunity to speak with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss recent media reports about our briefing last Friday. I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press, and we both agreed that they are extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security.

We also discussed the private security company document, which was widely circulated in recent months among the media, members of Congress and Congressional staff even before the IC became aware of it. I emphasized that this document is not a U.S. Intelligence Community product and that I do not believe the leaks came from within the IC. The IC has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions. However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security.

President-elect Trump again affirmed his appreciation for all the men and women serving in the Intelligence Community, and I assured him that the IC stands ready to serve his Administration and the American people.

James R. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence

    It becomes clearer.

The MI6 agent in question is the same one that cracked the Litvinenko polonium poisoning case and the FIFA corruption case. Hence the highly 'credible source' quoted in the press.

He passed this unverified intelligence on to the UK ambassador in Moscow who in turn gave it to John McCain. He then gave it to the FBI. It would have been passed around various staffers until it was leaked. Probably because it's funny and they all hate Trump.

Apparently, the 'golden' rule of espionage is you don't let folk 'see the strings' being pulled so somebody has crossed a line. Especially as the report was unverified.

So, a respected UK spy gets trashed. The FBI look like amateurs and the Russians are furious because it exposes what actually goes on in the world of international relations to an otherwise unaware public.

Trump holds a ludicrous press conference, the liberal left get accused of spreading fake news by Trumpers that spread the shite Breitbart and Live-leaks spew out.

    So that's that sorted.

Oddly, it might actually turn out to be true. Which would be genuinely funny if a video gets out.

Journalism (mainly left of centre) is to blame for much of this mess. Or at least proper journalism's failure to find new ways to fund itself. Investigative journalism takes time and money. Traditional media has become unable or unwilling to pay for it - it's increasingly too much of an expensive gamble.

Comment is cheap and has an immediate return. Opinion pieces are replacing real investigative work and journalists are producing more of them, and getting paid more for them. Devaluing the medium has levelled the playing field to such an extent that pro journalists are operating in the same space as 4chan trolls and pre-pubescent bloggers. And losing.

Trump can shout FAKE NEWS in the knowledge that lots of it is - at best opinion or regurgitation, and even if it isn't, there's so much of it swilling around, it's too much effort to prove otherwise.

Journalists sit on twitter all day, desperate not to miss the next story - and to have a reaction piece online before it's forgotten for the next.
