Journalism (mainly left of centre) is to blame for much of this mess. Or at least proper journalism's failure to find new ways to fund itself. Investigative journalism takes time and money. Traditional media has become unable or unwilling to pay for it - it's increasingly too much of an expensive gamble.

Comment is cheap and has an immediate return. Opinion pieces are replacing real investigative work and journalists are producing more of them, and getting paid more for them. Devaluing the medium has levelled the playing field to such an extent that pro journalists are operating in the same space as 4chan trolls and pre-pubescent bloggers. And losing.

Trump can shout FAKE NEWS in the knowledge that lots of it is - at best opinion or regurgitation, and even if it isn't, there's so much of it swilling around, it's too much effort to prove otherwise.

Journalists sit on twitter all day, desperate not to miss the next story - and to have a reaction piece online before it's forgotten for the next.

    • Even if the funding for investigative journalism was doubled, I think people would still be drawn to sensationalist news that tells them what they want to hear.yuekit

    • "mainly left of centre" comment renders your observation as explicitly biased, this is the core of the issue as journalists do the same...whatthefunk
    • A huge amount of the opinion piece glut is left of centre outrage in reaction to trump tweets etc. It's filling the space where analysis should be.Fax_Benson
