The number one thing, and I will repeat this every time this thread is posted is that you need to really know music and be an expert on the kind of music you want to play. If all you do is learn the technical side you will just be a guy with turntables playing music.
The other thing is a knack for blending tracks together.

I'm with ukit. Any idiot can download Ableton and have it automix some tracks he downloaded off myspace (see Girl Talk). If you really have a specific musical interest it will lead you all over the place. You'll need to dig into the roots, keep track of the new stuff, and find the branches to the other genre's. A lot of it is the programming and knowing how tracks can interact with each other.
All that said, you can easily become a vinyl junkie and blend in some new school Serato tech. Personally, I'm all vinyl at the moment, but I'll be adding in Serato when I get my finances in order. I'll never give up the vinyl. My view on CD's is that they're a throw away medium that will become extinct (except for the vocal trance dj's as they evidently seem to love those things) as the mp3/laptop techonlogy advances.

ya if you learn anything about the history of djing everyone says the best djs around were the guys with the best records. that's why they used hide their vinyl. it evolved into looping and using two decks to mix.

I don't know much about the laptop alternative, other than that I see it around a lot. How can I upload pictures on here?

I love Salsa and Latin stuff besides the more traditional electronica stuff. And I'd consider the mixing and practicing fun, I mean isn't researching and experimenting the fun part anyways? Who just plays auto tracks? Crazy.
- remind me.,but I have a ton of music you might find interesting that I'm willing to share.Audria

you like latin you should spin this cat, pretty fresh but still straight up latin groove...his album is more upbeat than the stuff on his myspace. Tu Boca Lo Quita is alright...mix in a dance synth/beat jajajaja

i have been a dj for 10 years, i use vinyl and serato. I love to do it and encourage anyone that wants to do it, to do it right. Programming and Good Mixing are equally important. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to hear people play and they just trainwreck or fade every mix, cause they have assumed programming is the only thing they need to worry about.
DJing correctly:
-vinyl
-2 Technic 1200s or above (don't get talked into anything else)
-mixer: 2 channels, with EQs.
-headphones
-speakers
-practice-then, think about serato... you have to crawl before you can walk.

- A DJ here at Beauty Bar plays sweet tunes, wrecks every transition though on serato...marchelo

Get Technics if you are going vinyl, and Pioneer CDJ's for CD based spinning. I personally switched to cd's because I got tired of hauling records around. I also have used Scratch Live and Mixmeister which are entirely different than cd's or vinyl. I still use my vinyl sometimes because I love it, but the skill level required for vinyl is definitely higher if you are just starting out. I suggest the Pioneer CDJ 800 MK2 since you have to buy no vinyl, although there is nothing like vinyl and the tricks you can do with it.
- the denon cd decks are ok tooacescence
- yeah Denon's are good, but the CDJ's can usually be found cheaper.amongthemasses
