I'm with ukit. Any idiot can download Ableton and have it automix some tracks he downloaded off myspace (see Girl Talk). If you really have a specific musical interest it will lead you all over the place. You'll need to dig into the roots, keep track of the new stuff, and find the branches to the other genre's. A lot of it is the programming and knowing how tracks can interact with each other.
All that said, you can easily become a vinyl junkie and blend in some new school Serato tech. Personally, I'm all vinyl at the moment, but I'll be adding in Serato when I get my finances in order. I'll never give up the vinyl. My view on CD's is that they're a throw away medium that will become extinct (except for the vocal trance dj's as they evidently seem to love those things) as the mp3/laptop techonlogy advances.
