hmm. refunktion that price is great... can I trust the site you linked there? I'm always skeptical of those.

there is no way you can get the 40d for $500. i wouldn't trust that vendor at least. those are usually all located in brooklyn. and when you try and order the "sweet deal" it will say they are either a)out of stock or b)since you are going to get this great camera at a great price you should also buy this "extras" package for $250. the "extras" are usually som camera wipes, a cheap-ass bag, and maybe a couple other accessories (read as garbage).
also, i would recommend also getting this lens. pretty fresh for portrait stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm…feels super cheap and plastic, but takes some pretty great pics!
- yeah, the trick is to buy the thing you want.refunktion
- they have them for sale here for 500 but i dont think that includes a lens????********

No Nikon D40 or D60....grip isnt good....your hand will have cramps. Canon yeah...check out offers on cashback on Canon 450D and 40D... ; )

a 40d for $500 is a scam
- I almost fell for it..
the guy says: you want the chinese model right? TRUE STORYMeeklo - not always, you just have to do your research and make sure you know who you are dealing with.refunktion
- show me a place with a price like that that isn't a scam - most people never knowformed
- I almost fell for it..

I have a Nikon D50, I like it a lot but if I were to do it again I'd get a canon

Get a second hand canon with the 50mm f1.8
20d or 30d.. i have had a 300d and the 40d, and the 40d reigns supreme over the 300d.its the difference between tinky plastic and a proper camera

Nikon d40 is a good choice.
However, I'd go with the new Sony a200.
I just got one myself and love it. It has VR built into the body so you don't end up spending a boat load on lenses either. and they run at about $499.99 for the body and kit lense.- yup. did that and it was worth it for a noobie like me********
- haha, same here

i have bought through a vendor like that in the past, but there are ways to check companies for there legitimacy. I dunno about the one i linked there, but i have seen similar prices from more reputable places. Most are not literal scams (as in you send money and get nothing in return) they are usually companies that buy the product full price from the manufacturer and resale at cheaper prices to get the traffic and get you to buy the other items you don't necessarily need at a higher mark up.... Resellers do this ALL the time... i have been working within product design and manufacturing for a LONG time. Personally, I would never buy such a camera off of craigslist though... there are zero guarantees, ebay for sure, but not craigslist.
- sorry about my run-ons in there.refunktion
- i've had really good luck on craigslist for this actually.
* knocks on wood.lvl_13 - word... that is good for good luck.refunktion

cameras at your average retailer/store are marked up around 5% to 10%. so when i see a camera that is retailing a few hundred dollars under what is the market norm my spidey senses start tingling.
often the camera will be a model intended for sale in another market - like Meeklo said. warranties on those cameras are only honored in the country of intended sale.
if something is too good to be true it usually is. especially if the offer is over the net.

Nobody likes Pentax here? great cameras at a good price. Try out the k200d if your in the market for d40 / xsi. weather sealed and better build quality, plus in camera shake reduction

the more i look at the offerings, i wouldn't imagine paying much less than $800 for a 40d, so yeah... i would be careful, but there are non-scams that exist for cheaper prices for the reasons i stated above.... moral: be careful.

I bought the sony a200. The price vs megapixel against the nikon was no match. 6.4 megapixels vs 10.8? you gotta go with sony unless you are going to drop some more dough

That's without the lens, too. I almost bought one but it came in close to 2k with everything.
Went with the Nikon D80, about 1100 for the full kit (8 months ago), probably get some good deals now.

Used 20D or 30D to begin with, some places add their own warranty. Canon's marketing is brilliant in that the lenses are expensive and the kit ones are quite shitty. The only cheap lens worth checking out is the 50mm f/1.8
- readyok0
I think a lot of the cheaper Canon lenses are worth buying. I bought the cheaper 28mm 2.8 lens, and I love it. It runs about $200. Well worth the purchase. All their higher end lenses are ridiculous. They are beautiful and produce some crisp images. The entire range of canon shit is well worth the buyin on the canon lens mount.

There is a video on digital SLR cameras on google video

wait a month and see if the rumors about the canon 3d are true. a full-frame camera with 15 mp for under 2K?
