a close friend of mine, who just recently switched to freelance, told me he bills $140-$165/hr. granted that most of his work is with/thru an agency, but it's been digging at me all day. to be honest, i really hate talking about rates/salary/income... but when it does come around, i usually think i can hold my own. compared to my conservative (or cheap) $55-$65/hr, i feel like it's totally a pissing contest, and i'm not going the distance.

There is no way. That means as a designer he is pulling +/- 330K a year.
- yeah, that's about what I'm pulling in.Lt_Jack_Hammer

Most freelancers who il hourly don't end up working 40 hour weeks. In my estimation.

Well there is no way I would hire a designer that was 140-160 an hour. If there was marketing, strategy and placement included then yes, but as a designer hell no
- exactly. i mean a mid-sized design firm charges in that range (150-225). but one guy???!lvl_13

maybe if he was doing some branding and building guides and such, but that seems WAAAAY too high just for being a 'designer'

The other thing klu to think about is at the $55 - $80/hr range you will appeal to more clients as a freelancer and most likely get more repeat business and better opportunities, rather than a big ass check once every 2 months.
- yea, that's my experience. all my clients have been long term.klu

does he give rusty trombones after concept pitches?

I usually enter design contests....so I never really get paid for my work.
But seriously that seems high....but maybe not in L.A. Wait 'till his non-agency related clients start walking away from him because they don't want to pay that much, then tell them you'll do their work for $100/hr :)

Designers are easily charged out at those rates through agencies, they will only see half of it though.

Shit, for $140-165 an hour his work shouldn't just be 'solid' it should fucking transcend space and time.

I wonder how much Dr_Rand and Sagmeister charge per hour

the key questions and some of you touched on it, is how many hours does he bill at that rate and how many do you bill at your rate... you might get more work and 3x hours. Then you make more. don't sweat it.
