Who's considered going back to school for this, or know anyone who has?

what do you plan to do with a MA? teach, manage, design.

good question, right now i'm a designer, but not satisfied with the kind of work i've been doing (stare at computer all day, move things around.)
feel that it might be a good opportunity to move into a more interesting direction in the industry by expanding my education beyond just design to biz/mrktng/mgmt etc.
- what kind of work would you like to be doing?Complexfruit
- I enjoy working on high end print, altho since this is dying out and i enjoy talking to ppl during the day, i figured i could leverage my design/biz/mrktg skills.lorac77

I wanted to do that, but I gotta finish my bachelor first.

i used to get stuff in the mail from them when i lived in ny. i do not know a lot about their program, but my thoughts are if you pursue a masters in the design, it will not really earn you a whole lot aside from the opportunitiy to teach.
i don't know that having an ma or mfa can really command a lot more salary-wise, and it is no guarantee to an employer that someone actually has better ability than someone with just a bachelors.
that being said, if you pursuing to solely enrich yourself and further your studies, you could easily look for continuing ed classes or certification courses at sva or pratt (assuming you are in ny) and probably benefit from better instruction and analysis.
likewise you could also try to find a different job. a lot of times, this is the best way to learn, and you don't have to pay either.
- its in graphic mgmt & tech - so i think it expands on the design knowledge in the areas of biz + techlorac77

if designing does not inspire you already, you may need to return to school. graphic design has MANY cousins, you can do a multitude of things.

even tho i already have the design background (bfa from parsons), i am unsatisfied with the lack of interesting design positions out there. all i know is i want to expand my current knowledge, keep my skills up and if i just continue to freelance around, i'm not gonna get anywhere because there are a million designers out there. i guess im feeling like im a designer on the road to nowhere, and this might help broaden the horizons and lead me to something different, or at least give me more connections to get the kind of work i want.

didnt mean to give the impression i dont enjoy design per se - my problems have more to do with finding a decent job in this market and it seems like a good way to increase options, expand network/horizons + increase knowledge. wouldnt do it to command more $$ or respect, just as a vehicle to change things up a bit.

one of the most proven ways to get ahead and go where you want to go is to just "put it out there" so to speak. buy books, go to conferences, press the flesh, give out a business card, meet people, learn to talk the talk, be social, etc, et al. I promise if you do that, in less than one year you will be moving up the ladder and closer to where you want to be. also, remember, you're in NY and anything can happen in a moment, you just have to be ready for it.
I believe in you.

if that's the case go for an mba. i think this program is probably too focused on just the design and communications industry. however, i think your best bet is to quit freelancing and get in somewhere big enough to learn a lot of different things, but not too big that you will be siloed. stay and observe for a few years. make some connections.

heh, thanks - yeah i do actually leave the house and know how to network. originally was asking if anyone has done the program. realize that alot of designers dont do the MA thing but this one seems decent. agree with you on the mba note - i think parsons has a bba but its undergrad.

to me the only purpose of an MA or to go back to school for a BA would be an uninterrupted 2-4 years of making new work that is much more within the direction of where you want to go creatively. The perks is that some schools bring in designers and open doors to opportunities not normally attainable, as well as windows to different avenues of design not earlier discovered. the cons, prob not a ton you wouldnt or dont already know... going back to school sounds rad, but basically you are paying for free time to fuck around which is pimp just at a hefty price tag.
