Aah sure they're getting better but I can remember times on the BBC when it was "The British athlete" if they won "The (Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh) athlete if they didn't.

why a total metal count? who care if you win 300 bronze medals, it should be only gold that counts. Or, at least a weighted points system
where gold =5 pts, silver 3, bronze 1 or whatever.

probably because the US is doing well and winning some good gold. I think you'd see the exact same if the tables were flipped.

- i doubt it.ephix
- China = 26 gold, USA = 16 gold... so, no... but we'll see after the track events are over :-Dkingsteven

Really don't worry about it MrMonk - My wife was really anxious going to the UK, being painfully aware of her fellow country men's reputation and image management problems around the world, and I admit I was a little, knowing had ban mannered some people can be, and how American honesty and forth-rightness can be easily mis-interpreted as arrogance...
But, it was fine - not that many people actually meet americans, and if anything the recent global media fuelled 'hatred' of the Bush admin's foray into Iraq etc has made people curious as to how the american they meet is going to behave, so we were met with more curiosity than anything.
I will maintain that pound for pound american's are more polite to strangers than english people, and so the social wheels were oiled and everyone came off pleasantly surprised...

The U.S.A. puts a lot of emphasis on athletics and are known for patriotism. Of course they will win more medals. Sometimes I wish Canada would get more funding, but then I remember that the Olympics comes around every couple years or every four years (depending on how you look at it), and we're great during the Winter Olympics. More support for athletes would be nice, but not to the point where colleges put a lot of weight on it for acceptance, etc.
CBC still puts China first though. U.S.A. is second.
- Canada takes no prisoners when it comes to hockey. I love Canadian hockey.dog_opus
- Canadians love hockey too. It was devastating (at least for the media) when the men lost in the last Olympics.Jaline
- I so want to go to Vancouver come 2010.omgitsacamera
- I really do.Jaline

Jaline is right (as always) in saying that the US puts alot of emphasis on athletics. Go to any decent high school and you can see why. Sometimes so much so that we have to make a tv series about football...
- I come from a rabid hockey school... probably why I'm so into winter olympics over summer.ismith
