to make it short:
Seems that apple have implemented on the iphone software a remotely controlled switch that deletes unwanted (from Apple, not from the user) applications."Apple raised hackles in computer-privacy and security circles when an independent engineer discovered code inside the iPhone that suggested iPhones routinely check an Apple Web site that could, in theory trigger the removal of the undesirable software from the devices." Well i dont know about anyone else, but im pretty happy with all the software and apps i can get already - why would I want to install something that was not authorised by the manufacturer. Do you try and put leaded fuel in your unleaded car? - or is there a different shaped nozzel preventing you from doing so? isnt that restricting your choices to fuck up your car or not?! i mean, its your own car! The manufacturer doesnt own it anymore.
If an application is shithot then surely Apple are going to give it the OK anyway so they can sell it through their shop and make some cash from the sales.
The iphone is a complex little thing and i could imagine it would be VERY easy to fuck it all up by installing some crap software you found on some website. So i can see why apple would like the ability to control what goes on the phone.
A lot of people are hating the iphone and i think its people believing the hype of crapmeisters like above trying to sell his book.
I'm fully aware of Apples publicity machine and advertising campaigns and I dont believe that an apple computer will lighten up my life or that if i buy an ipod then il be dancing around happy all the time. Rather than going for these products I actually did some homework and - in the mp3/media player example - I did some research and found the best players to be Archos so I got one of those. My contract was up with my supplier with phone this month so I thought i'd look around. 02 does some good ddeals on the iphone.
It was a no-brainer, the iphone kicks EVERY phone out theres ass in terms of usability (what other manufacturer has a minimal 5 page booklet as their manual ...... NONE!), the amount of apps you can get for the phone.
The PROs WELLLLL outweigh the CONs
Ive seen or owned a lot of gadgets over the years and I have to say this is the most impressive on so many levels

I still don't have a mobile phone and it hasn't changed my life one bit.

Wow, only the fanboys would argue that this is a good thing. Apple has always been a control freak and this is much too Big Brotherish. All in the name of profit, of course. Don't fool yourself into thinking Apple just wants to protect your iphone from "bad software".
If you purchase the phone, it's yours to do whatever the hell you want to with it. If I want to buy one and use it as a coaster, that is my right.

True, mods are often awesome. My MP3 player is hacked, I've had it for years. I've had my PS2 hacked so I can get some really fast loading times as well (not to steal games). I can get near instant loadings on most games.

i'd like to stress that im NO Apple fan, I use PC's at work and I wouldnt waste my money on an ipod - you can get a lot better for a LOT cheaper.im sorry but everything else about the iphone completely outweighs the fact that 'maybe' sometime in the future Apple might restrict the phone to "apple-certified-only" applications.

^I wouldn't argue at all that they are good phones. Possibly, best-in- class. It just sounded like you were trying to put a positive spin on this issue. It seems certain that they will limit the applications, and this def isn't a good thing. On top of that people have to pay to develop anything for the iphone. I think the things Apple does in the name of "brand control" are annoying. Sorry to mistake you for a fanboy :)
