This is a homepage design for a website selling teaching materials to accompany a book. Mainly aimed a teachers but with a kid friendly angle as in future there may be some kids resources. Its my first proper grid based design, so could use some feedback. Is the footer too bright, I can’t decide? Are there too many fonts? It definitely needs some list icons for the links. Anything else?
thanks

Not a bad start, but I would zero in on your typography a bit, it's a bit all over the place in terms of visual hierarchy. Check your title choices against the rest of your copy, the size, font, and placement, and try to find some variance in there for the other elements, specifically the size of Mary's name in relation to the "Welcome", and the differences between the content on the yellow and the column to the right. I would pick a different body copy font, and decrease the leading and size a bit, but like I said, good start.

Thanks for advice, are you thinking same font for titles and copy (ie georgia for headlines and text) or stick with a different font, just not the current one

the hand-drawn elements around the site are kinda interesting.
i don't care for the brown background color. maybe try to go for an off white instead? the brown makes it appear a bit too ethnic or tea-like. i don't think the footer is too bright if the top colors are tweaked a bit.
