in a perfect world a tilt shift lens. once upon a time all good food photography was shot with on 4x5 so shape and focus could be manipulated and controlled.
outside of that just get a nice lens preferable no shorter the 50mm

the faster the lens the shallower the focus you will be able to achieve--sometimes a good look for food

what camera are you using?
... Rand is right.. faster is better, and alot of the food stuff we shoot is also macro, or at least a lens that has macro available.. if you are shooting 35, I would go with a range between 18-80, 2.8 if you've got it....is it table top stuff, like a dish of food, or food items on a entire table?

classic food photography always has the background out of focus as the doctor just mentioned. this is why perspective control lens/camera (tilt/shift) were commonly used.

a 40D and that lens will work just fine.
what lighting do you have?

I like the natural light look for food

hot lights and food don't mix well....
instead of getting a new lens consider buying/renting some strobes.
preferable a soft box and a umbrella combo. stay away from bare bulbs as there not very flattering and create harsh shadows.
