700 is full frame, 300 is not.. 700 is more $$...
.. what lenses do you have now, and what would you be using it for?

lower cost and higher reach of the d300 vs low light image quality of the d700

if you have DX lenses go for 300.
if you plan to buy FX lenses or use old skool nikon or nikkor lenses, go for the 700.
- You only need to purchase DX for a Fisheye or wideangle lens, use FX for the rest. I have the D300 and love it. But I haven't tried the D700.technikiller

I would go for the 700 because of the full frame, since almost all of lenses are '70s Nikkors...

the only aspect of full frame I desire is improved high iso

i dont have a wide range of lens both dx and fx. i can do either but i feel as though everything is moving toward fx and continue to buy dx lens may not be good in next 3-5 years

i do more low light with no tripod.

I have a 300, and its worked well for me (although the wife uses it 99% of the time..) When I upgraded from the 200, I got all new lenses, so I don't plan on grabbing a 700..
But if you have the lenses, and the $, its a pretty damn nice cam

i am coming from D80.. not sure if i should take on d700 or d300

Since I have no idea what you are talking about, I would say go with the 700 because of the higher number.

I want the d300 since it's in my budget and has a little extra reach. but if i had the money, i'd probably get the d700 instead (well, probably the d3).

oops, that's truth, my mistake.
i wrote 1.0 instead of 1.4.
the correct ir 1.4 or 1.2 lens

i just got the D300 with 18-200mm nikkor and the 10-17mm tokina.
I'm loving it.

IMHO
i know allot of people who are asking this question.
today i would suggest the d300 simply 'cause its cheaper and cameras depreciate very fast. spend that money on lights or lenses. instead.
for long run i like the d700 since its using a full frame sensor. my guess is as the cost to develop sensors falls the dx series will eventually be phased out. so investing in high quality dx glass seems like a waste in the long term.

currently i am using D80, i see a lot of grain and i also blame my lack of talent in photography in my current camera.
what should i do?
