Personally I think something such a forum needs to be fairly boring.
You could call a page in a book boring because its just black ink on paper but thats all it needs to be, content is key.

if you are serious about this, I would have someone else design it. You are too close to the project, and are thinking one dimensionally.
That way you can put your energy into growing the site.
