I always default to The Handmaid's Tale when thinking of an answer to questions like this, because it's always struck me as my most unexpectedly brilliant read. I consider this grossly unfair to my favourite authors though - Iain [M] Banks, Bret Easton Ellis and Stanislaw Lem. I could pick any one book from these authors and hold it in as high a regard.
- Again, I don't mean to write like a twat - it just comes out that way. Guess that means that, deep down, I'm a twat.detritus
- Twat!Ruffian
- ever got round to handmaids tale, must dig it outkelpie
- Do. It's - and I probably sound like a mysoginist here - a truly feminine book. Yet dystopian sci-fi - what more cud u want?detritus
- Cat's Eye, also by Atwood, is a great book too.monkeyshine

I can't answer that question. Last ones which really blew me away were Stone Junction by Jim Dodge and The Road by Cormack McCarthy, but at a push I'd say Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins
- The Road? Really? I trust your opinion. see - I had to stop reading after 20 pages - though it was a load of tosh.detritus
- I'll give it another go, I guess.
My mum recommended it to me originally and she's usually pretty good.detritus - I thought it was amazing, some of the best written word I have ever seen. made me quite emotional. not proper sci fi though, eh, you geektron ;)kelpie
