Obviously, everyone knows that this style is dated. I'm sure the guy who did it knew it was dated. That being said, I don't think this is that bad of an ad. The goal was to show off the new packaging, so creating a scenario that shows it from multiple views seems fine to me. Again, there are a million ways you could have done that, but this isn't that bad.
The just for men ad, however, is just pure shit.

Do you really think we would have consciously picked chris brown to appear in this? but he sells himself and clearly boxes of gum.

I wouldn't call it horrible, but I can picture the ad meeting, with someone high above at the company rejected an original pitch and instead said... "have you seen those apple commercials? let make it more like that...
