yes i have a house style - it comes from having zero source material at the begining of every project and no budget for custom photos etc :(

I would say it varies from one client to the next...but one thing that is consistent across anything I've done in the past few years is cleanliness. Not necessarily minimalism for the sake of being spartan, I just believe in no more than just enough.

using photoshop filters to make it look as if it was hand painted.

Illustrators have a style.
But I believe a style should not be created and bought into unless you are one of those rare few.
As I designer I take every job as a clean start, I listen, research and find a solution that is [hopefully] right for the job. Style's go out of fashion and those that try to create one have a tired book before they have started.
We are there to make a client communicate what THEY want to say not pander to our own stylistic ego's.
Does Pentagram have a "style"?

the designers i work with are obsessed with gradients and the grid system for websites.

Yes, Dancer it's an interesting question. I'm sure when many of us started were inspired by and looked up to people like Carson or TDR who had a very "defined" style.
Then when you get into the real world you learn that that is sort of self-indulgent to think that way when you are working for real clients.
But...the fact is that most famous, mega-successful designers DO have a style and in fact that's largely why they are famous. So I think it can be something to aspire to even if you don't use it on every job or if it is constantly changing.

I tend toward agreement with Dancer.

My only "style guide" when I was at uni:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smile-Mi…There are the rare few... Build being the current style that everyone is buying into – he seems to keep one step ahead though, this is why he is so widely respected and has a real grasp of innovation and development. But people copy, and copy and copy and yawn yawn yawn. I would never aspire to copy a style. I look for ideas, solutions...

Yeah - it's a kind of a conundrum, because obviously you need to address the solution to the problem that client is paying you for. It would be really dumb and self indulgent to try and impose your style on something when the project didn't call for it.
On the other hand, if there were no "Builds" in the world style would never advance and we wouldn't get new ideas. Even what we view as a *neutral* style can be traced back to innovations in the early to mid 20th century.

Lot's of Cowbell. I like to start fresh on every project. I have my own style as far as design & photography. I think it really comes down to the client need.

Always starts as my style, usually minimal, typographic.. Usually proceeds to get wanked on until it's a mixture of my style, the clients bad taste, and anything they want me to rip off.
