How do you get inspired by an uninspiring project?

You know those projects you just don't want to think about at all? How do you go about changing the way you think about it to where you're excited about it?

In projects where the client is looking for a few options, I like to throw everything out the window for one of the options and create the design exactly as I would like to do it, free from the client's requirements and bad ideas. Many times, they end up picking this one even if it wasn't what they asked for.

Yeah That's kind of what I ended up doing. My boss kind of doesn't like it though.

Well like I said just one of the options. I'll always create another one that is exactly what I think the client wants just to be safe:)
That way, at least you don't get bored though.

yup, good to stir things up and give a 'what if...' idea out there. I agree, many times they like it more.

As a designer, you're only as good as your last piece of work. There are no real excuses otherwise it was a mistake to take on the job in the first instance. If it's a 'quick n' dirty job' sweep it under the rug and don't sign your name to it.

Here is how I do it.
First take the project to the extreme, crazy shit with all the boom bang, lightning and tits it can get. Then trash it.
Then make the project the most boring you can, even more boring than the client asked for. Then trash it.
Now you make the project like you would like it to be. You have already gone too Sid Vicious and too Jacob Nielsenish, so it's going to be pretty close to what you and properly you client would like.
