I've finally decided to dive into processing, despite my historical aversion to mathematical thinking and programming. I ordered the Processing manual from Amazon, which appears to be very thorough and has been received well by the design community. I look at some of the beautiful compositions made with this software, and I'm like, "This pretty much looks like the future of design," so I want to be a part of it. It looks ideal for the dual purpose of design: i.e., marrying information to visual enjoyment. It seems to have earned a reputation for bridging the programming/aesthetic gap.
I'm wondering what designers' impressions are of this cool new technology, especially those of you who, like me, have classically struggled with code.

I've recently picked up the book and starting to dabble. I've been using Actionscript for years, so I already have a taste for using programming to create visual and interactive experiences. I wanted to pick up processing as a way to expand my skills and start doing things differently.

it took me a while to start programming, but once you have the basics down, the advanced topics won't look nearly as intimidating and will become more accessible.
it really isn't that difficult to get started with processing, although its definitely helpful if you know even the slightest bit about OOP programming before jumping in. the processing manual(the one put out by mit press) is probably the most comprehensive book written on programming that i have ever read. its all in there: intro to programming syntax, trigonometric functions, circuitry (for physical computing), how digital audio and video are processed. plus it was written by the creators of processing, ben fry and casey reas, who obviously know their shit. good luck with it!- Yeah, that's the one I ordered. I've dabbled in AS, but pretty much backed away.dog_opus

How would you compare what you can achieve with AS with Processing?

Stuff on blogs like this is definitely inspiring
- Yeah, definitely! We're really living in a pivotal era for design (and everything else, for that matter).dog_opus
- that site is definitley one of my favoritesarmsbottomer

a lot of the power from processing comes from the libraries out there. I don't know much about AS libraries, but i've seen some pretty insane work being done with it when they are implemented, such as audio reactive animation and physical computing. i believe a major difference is support for openGL scripting in processing.

I see AS and Processing as different tools used for different goals. To create and interactive application AS is hard to beat. Processing seems more focused on visualizations of data and aesthetics. One doesn't replace the other. I'm hoping what I learn with one will advance the other as well.

Every couple of years I flutter back to the idea of meddling with graphic-generating algorithms. Within hours of downloading The Latest Software (in whatever guise it finds itself) I've usually given up, through a combination of programming-retardation and fear, having seen what The Better People are achieving.
I like to think of myself as a graphics gourmand, hungrily consuming other people's expertise from the safety of the sidelines.
Please, don't read any innuendo into that line, that's disgusting.

this is an example of a really cool library for processing put out by daniel shiffman at NYU, that implements the mac book pro sudden motion sensor. so much fun to muck around with.- v3ga's blog:

you may now call yourself a new media designer.
everyone else doing websites with business cards that say "new media designer" please change it back to "web designer":)

I'm with detritus.

So, on that openprocessing site, how do they render the projects in the browser?
- I had a link to this, which I'm sure I put on QBN a while back, but I'll be damned if I can find it.detritus
- ah,here we go, perhaps?

in processing, go to file-> export application. it will create a webpage with applet embedded inside, along with a link to the source code.

why doesn't someone just make a plugin I can click until it randomly generates something I like, then let me save it?

I know that a Javascript app. has recently been written to integrate Processing content into browsers.

with this you can output your processing code through a swf file:

I want to bring this back up for any nighttime code geeks to respond.

what book is this you speak of?
