im really genuinely curious about this.
how are guys like this successful or popular in any way? anyone can shoot this.. it's nothing but a cliche, horribly exposed "indie" polaroid.
the only thing this guy has that 99% of other people don't is ACCESS. anyone else, those would just be polaroids of random jerks wearing beer goggles or chicks making out. instead, its celebrities.
so.. why do people pay guys like this?

I guess it's all who you know? He might have an in or something to give him a nice head start. There's tons of people like this, though. The difference is his level of quality. If other people see it as quality and high-value work, then that's what it is.

those guys are on some serious shit and preston lacy is one fat fuck

"anyone can shoot this"
... ugh, and i cringe when i hear people say shit like this.

Why does it bother you so much. The pictures up on your website are decent enough. Just keep doing what you're doing and people will catch on. At least, that seems to be the trend with music, see: Green Day.

half the battle of taking photos like these is just making your subjects feel comfortable enough to reveal themsleves and let go infront of the camera. i'd imagine terry is very good at this.
and then having the technical and artistic skills to capture a fantastic image.

I've been into stuff for a while, could jealousy be behind making a topic on a forum to bad mouth him on the internet?
Im mean he shoots Kate Moss what's not to jealous of I dont blame you...

why did fred durst get so popular?

I tend to agree with Was, pretty much anyone could have shot these. They look like family happy snaps. Nothing special about the grading or composition.
- it was an intentional aesthetic decision to have celebrities posing in traditional family snap shotsarmsbottomer

Anyone can shoot this shit technically, there's nothing super amazing about the lighting etc... But can you organize and get two dudes to dress up as Batman and Robin and have them makeout for you? Also, you have to be a hipster to pull this stuff off, and have lots of interesting friends to shoot.

like it or not.
photography is not solely about technique anymore.point of view, in the sense of cultural environment or background is so much more important. and the particular way of looking at things and subjective selection can make or break a photographer. in that sense, photography as a business model for succes, things have diversified and differentiated from the classical standards of good photography.
so, terry is known for his particular style/subject, not for being a technically masterful photographer.
they, the "masters", will still exist, but next to their audience there's a whole world of distinct target audiences with a different set of expectations in regard to art.

hmm, anyone can shoot like this ey? well what makes richardson special is he was the 1st. its often copied (rarely duplicated). he started shooting deliberately downward aspirational type images in a world saturated with glossy and glamorous high fashion and label obsessed upwardly aspirational imagery (contast david lachapelle). I think what richardson does is totally appropriate and necessary in a world of label and image obsessed sheep, and if he gets his dick sucked along the way? well so much the better for him.
If you could do it, you would have. but you didnt. so its his name up there held to ridicule and not yours. So then, could anyone do it? maybe now that he has shown them the way. but it took that one idea to launch a thousand american apparels.

good thread btw..
doesn't happen too often anymore here lately.

those photos are awesome.
@was: 'anyone can shoot this' - I think you need to give this guy some credit - the photos on that site on your profile are nice shots, but the ones on his site make you feel uncomfortable and awkward but something about them is attractive. and it's not the celebrity aspect, it's the lighting combined with the subject and content, etc.
It's kind of like when you see a guy in jeans and a tshirt but his are a lot cooler than yours jeans and a tshirt, and you don't know why he looks like a cool hipster and you look like a normal dude.
anyway, nice photos, thanks for the link.
