EXAMPLE: Flight of the concords was refused by major record labels in NZ to be commercially viable and generate interest so they sought a deal overseas and now are huge and won an award.

yeah I do agree with meffid as well but hey you make do the best you can where you are
but like any "cities" Auckland and Wellington have both pros and cons if I had to choose I would pick Wellington

I'm from Auckland (recently moved to Sydney), and think there's very healthy design industry there. The pay is pretty good if you're in a decent studio, however the cost of living I find very high - but that's only if you want to live in a cool area like Ponsonby.
The lifestyle really is pretty damn good, and I believe Auckland was recently voted 5th best city in the world to live:
http://www.citymayors.com/featur…There is some fantastic, world-class work produced by these studios which all have offices in Auckland:

- RIZ is back
and go back to work luke
random_ink - yup design is healthy over here.. just you have to make your clients dollar go further in a smaller market can lead to some interesting headaches...Schnub

.... as will I, 3 week holiday over Xmas/NY - oh yeah! Hey Luke am I to assume that you're gonna move here to Sydney - do it bro!

I just did a week in Wellington on a contract launching a site, I love the chicks there, the clubs, the strip bars and the tourists and being so close to the cook straight you can see south island on a clear day.
The weather leaves my nuts in my lower abdomen however.
Auckland beaches are awesome and small drive to orewa and things. -1 or traffic.
Good and bad everywhere obviously, people just seem to think NZ is some magical land because it has precious. ;)- the summer was wicked in Welly think you just missed it by the sounds of it!blackspade

I'm just moving back there myself. The market is bouyant at the moment. RIZ and Random_Ink have pretty mush said it all.
New Zealand is amazing but... small and far away from the rest of the world! It really depends on what your looking for?I think this is a good book to read.

it's green, it's big, there aren't many people, but there are some very good designers.. wellington and auckland are ya best bet.. and if your in auckland gimme a holla ... i'm from here (old site old work btw... you know how it is.)
- lobstarr0
you know what... thats what i exactly thought... until i was hanging out with the partner in my company... basically said nz was the canada and au was the american in that part of the world... but thats just oranges and apples...
what's wrong with the weather? too cold or too warm??? it can't be as bad as toronto... i can't stand another winter.... or vancouver... where it pretty much rains 24/7/4 seasons... ... okay maybe im being wrong... 24/7/3.95 seasons ... 0.05 being that week of sun...
- Well if you go to Wellington. You'll notice that our rain falls horizontallyshapeaspect

S'a beautiful country. I'm planning on a move there in the near future. Never actually made it to Tauranga though.
- meffid0
I'm born and bred kiwi, haven't worked there for over 4 years.
The politics suck, the tax sucks, the transport sucks and the pay isn't great at all for designers or creative types. (IMHO of course)Tauranga is an awesome place, getting a job as a designer with great clients in a good studio could take up to a year to find.
Auckland is where it's at for design, along with Wellington, but again can take a while to find anything remotely worth going for.

Yes I work in New Zealand
I love it, cost of living is dependent on where you want to live, pay is relevant to what you do/skill set is and coming from Canada you probably wont have much culture shock - I have friends from Vancouver who are here at the moment and love it
