I'm from Auckland (recently moved to Sydney), and think there's very healthy design industry there. The pay is pretty good if you're in a decent studio, however the cost of living I find very high - but that's only if you want to live in a cool area like Ponsonby.
The lifestyle really is pretty damn good, and I believe Auckland was recently voted 5th best city in the world to live:

random_ink - yup design is healthy over here.. just you have to make your clients dollar go further in a smaller market can lead to some interesting headaches...Schnub
