Hello fellas,
What does this mean? "associate designer" position? In the NY area.
This as opposed to graphic designer, or senior designer.
I may have a job offer, mostly packaging/POP I think, the agency is a leading one too, I mean small offices, but all over the US.Thanks

it means they don't want to pay you a lot

You are a designer but by being an 'associate' it means we can pay you a lot less.

Is this true? about the pay?

I think it depends on where you are at. In some companies you will have a creative director thats say umm, the CD over 3 accounts. Then there is an ACD (associate creative director) underneath them, maybe one on each of those accounts and that is thier focus but they all three report and work under the CD, etc. but yeah like lloyd said, you get paid less.. well less than a CD.
ECD > CD > ACD > AD > Jr. AD/Designer

usually around jr from what I've seen.

Wouldn't associate mean that you have to spend into the company as well?

One of my co-workers wasn't aware of her exact title until it was published in an org chart.
She was labelled an Associate Designer.
This was obviuosly very confusing so she asked around and it turned out it was the lowest possible position for a designer on the team. Like an apprentace almost. Somebody who helps with the small tasks but isn't given any large projects.
It may mean different things to different businesses though.

As an associate designer, you are the lowest on the totem pole, the least experienced and least paid. This position is generally reserved for designers fresh out of school and or their first design job.
Good luck Jr!

This thread is the first result when searching for associate designer. I do wish positions in this industry were a little more standardized to avoid this sort of confusion. When every position is advertised requiring "minimum 3 years" experience it's impossible to tell from the title.
