I have a client that wont let this SEO thing die. At this point I'm done explaining how it works; do any of you know good companies that I can throw her way? I don't want to have to sift through that seedy part of the tubes.
Some people wont be satisfied until they pay for something - which is a good thing : unless ur actually trying to help someone out.

Actually, the best SEO'ers won't be at the top of Google--Google will have probably hand-edited them out, since Google, by nature, sees SEO as "gaming" the engine.
Anyway, check out:
SEOBook.com
BlueHatSEO.com
Scoreboard-Media.comThose are some resources that I've found useful in the past. Also, this has been tremendously helpful in explaining SEO to clients:

I'm not really an SEO'er--at least, I would be considered an amateur. (I don't do any colored-hat stuff; I stick with developing best practices and use them from the outset of a project.) That said, any specific questions, I'd be happy to offer my (amateur level) advice.
Hope this helps!

its hardly SEO if they "just want their name to come up" just make sure this is the first thing in the<title> and get some inbound links using the company name in the anchor text - directory submission would do - try www.webceo.com its free software that automated directory and search engine submission... just remember not to flood all at once and to drip build the links over time to avoid the sandbox - oh and submit a sitemap to google webmaster tools

but SEO is so 2002'ish

god... i was at a friend of mines birthday party, and a colleague of his, wouldn't leave me alone, just talking about bloody SEO, what is it with these people! I guess they have the same personality as the job they have... if they keep saying the right keywords I'll listen?

I've used one that guarantees top placement. Can cost anywhere for a few hundred to thousands per month, though.

"Trooper email me with how much. They don't need anything big at all. They just want their biz name to come up."
haha - is it a fixed price likes? lol.
there could be SOOOOOO many issues regarding SEO that is wrong with their current site. it could be something as simple as tweaking the meta-tags or it could mean a whole new redesign and restructure of their website.
