What does one do if they don't have a fax, and they want to get the contract thing out of the way with a client located in a different state?

if you client has a scanner then I would do it that way provided that you also have a scanner which I would guess that you do. Otherwise there is the efax option.

Is there something wrong with the postal service or is time an issue here?

1 scan your signature / stamp
2 embed them in the contract document
3 export as PDF
4 send

Yeah I hear you guys on the kinkos/office thing. I don't want to mail cause it just takes too long.
If I send them a pdf with my signature, how do I get theirs?
I guess I'll just break down and buy a $100 fax machine.

you should be PDFing your contracts with your signature in them, they have them scan/fax something back to you.
